It’s Christmastime, which means it’s time for Christmas films. It’s always time for a good Black Christmas film, though. Check out these films that need to be in your collection.

The Best Man Holiday

It had been over a decade since the first Best Man film, but the gang gets together again for the holidays. Some have gotten ahead in their careers. Some have hit speed bump. And some have just gotten around. But they must get over their difference to enjoy the holidays and deal with tragedy.

Black Nativity

Black Nativity is about a boy who learns where he comes from while piecing together his broken family. Plus, there’s singing, even if you have to turn down the volume at some points.

Friday After Next

Friday After Next might not be the first film to come to mind when thinking about Christmas, but what’s the holiday season without some Christmas hijinks? Craig and company are back at it again.

Last Holiday

The plot of Last Holiday is a little contrived, but Queen Latifah more than makes up for it. She is so charismatic and infectious, you hope she beats all odds as she deals with a fatal diagnosis and a hating a** hater.

A Madea Christmas

There are two Madea Christmas plays, so there was bound to be a Christmas film. If you’re a fan of the Madea films, then this is right up your alley.

The Perfect Holiday

When you’re a hardworking single mother of three kids, sometimes you need a perfect Christmas. That perfect Christmas could come in the form of a mall Santa.

The Preacher’s Wife

The Preacher’s Wife is a classic in Black cinema with a classic soundtrack to boot. Sometimes you just need an angel in your life. Whether that angel is helpful is another story.

This Christmas

To say this family is dysfunctional would be putting it lightly. This Christmas would make Tyler Perry proud. Plus, Chris Brown sings “This Christmas,” a song that’s still a mainstay on gospel radio during the holidays for some reason.

What’s your favorite Black Christmas film?

Love & Basketball

In honor of highlighting Gina Prince-Bythewood on Instagram, it’s time to throw it back to the turn of the millennium. Love & Basketball is timeless, and not just because Sanaa Lathan looks the same age now as she did back then. Love & Basketball shows how paths that seem parallel can intersect. Monica and Quincy find romance through their mutual love for basketball.

Synopsis:

In 1981 in L.A., Monica moves in next door to Quincy. They’re 11, and both want to play in the NBA, just like Quincy’s dad. Their love-hate relationship lasts into high school, with Monica’s edge and Quincy’s top-dog attitude separating them, except when Quincy’s parents argue and he climbs through Monica’s window to sleep on the floor. As high school ends, they come together as a couple, but within a year, with both of them playing ball at USC, Quincy’s relationship with his father takes an ugly turn, and it leads to a break up with Monica. Some years later, their pro careers at a crossroads, they meet again. It’s time for a final game of one-on-one with high stakes.

Cast:

Sanaa Lathan – Monica Wright

Omar Epps – Quincy McCall

Alfre Woodard – Camille Wright

Dennis Haysbert – Zeke McCall, Quincy’s father

Debbi Morgan – Mona McCall, Quincy’s mother
