Black History Month Day 8 – ‘Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom’

Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom

White supremacy had (read: has) its grip on America, but that was not the only place. White supremacy sank its hooks all the world, including Africa. White people invaded Africa and turned natives into prisoners in their own homes.

Apartheid was a period of racial segregation in South Africa. Millions suffered as they were ripped from their lives – their homes – and were forced into segregated communities and condemned to be second class citizens.

Many fought against Apartheid, though. The most famous of all was Nelson Mandela. He worked hard to dismantle Apartheid and was imprisoned for his actions. After serving 27 years in prison, he later became the first president of South Africa, ushering in a new age post-Apartheid. As president, he worked to eliminate the effects of Apartheid. After his term as president, he continued his activism and philanthropy.

Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom tells the story of Nelson Mandela, played by Idris Elba. It was based on Mandela’s autobiography, Long Walk to Freedom. It is available here.
