The Hate for Iris West is Real

Candice Patton as Iris West - The Flash

Iris West. In the comics, she’s the wife of Barry Allen, aunt of Wally West, and grandmother of Bart Allen. Basically, Iris is entwined with just about every incarnation of The Flash. So it’s only natural that they would import her in the latest reiteration of The Flash, the hit CW TV series. In this version, she’s a fledgling reporter and the love of Barry Allen’s life.

It’s interesting how such a prominent character in The Flash canon could receive so much hate. But then, the Iris on the TV series is Black. Now I’m don’t want to jump to conclusions, but the hate started even before the show started airing. As soon as the casting was released, Iris and the actor who plays her, Candice Patton, started receiving hate.

I don’t think it’s the fact that Iris is Black, but that she’s Black and the beloved Barry is fawning all over her. The vitriol that Iris (and Candice) receives on social media is vomit-inducing. Then there are those fans who don’t want to be seen as potentially racist and pretend to care about the wellbeing of Iris. They’ll make up excuses like how Barry isn’t good enough for Iris or how Iris should be independent and single. Now, I’m a proponent of leading ladies being single on TV, but Iris West is a canon love interest. And this whole independent thing seems to apply more to Black women (see Abbie Mills in Sleepy Hollow) than their counterparts.

Some fans are so anti-Iris, they cling to the nearest white woman, Caitlin Snow. There’s a whole fandom dedicated to Barry and Caitlin being together: SnowBarry. I have nothing against Caitlin, but I don’t see it for her and Barry. Caitlin is kinda boring. She has her own love interest. There’s no romantic chemistry between the two of them. And if the comics are any indication, she has a dark path ahead.

I know it seems like Iris can be very annoying at times, but that’s mostly because we usually only see her through the other characters’ lenses. Every other main character is hiding something from her, so her trying to find out what that is puts her in an antagonistic position in relation to them. That’s why I like the scenes where she’s at the newspaper. She’s away from the other main characters, and we get to see her shine, unburdened from the secrets they keep from her. We need more of those scenes.

However you feel about Iris, you got to admit Candice is killing it. I don’t know if there’s any other actor in her age range of any race who could do as good a job as she has. There are many who think Danielle Panabaker should’ve been Iris, but naw. She’s barely pulling off Caitlin. Candice takes what little the writers give her and knocks it out of the park. Like when Barry confesses her love to Iris, she manages to steal the scene without even saying a word. So hate her if you want, but she’s killing the game.

The Flash airs Tuesdays at 8/7c on The CW.

You’re right! Candice is absolutely killing it. I love her!

    • kory

      You’re so horribly wrong

      • Don Huizinga

Agreed. She is almost totally unlikable.

        • Shana Moore

          To you

      • Shana Moore

Because you disagree doesn’t make her wrong

  • Emily

She is killing it and thank you for acknowledging what others refuse to see…

  • dark186

Totally agree with what you wrote. I love Candace’s work and I love Iris. Making Candace the canon character Iris was a brilliant choice by the show’s creators. I just hope everyone has the patience to wait and see where they are taking this.

  • Jennifer Brown

This this this. THANK YOU for writing this!

  • All4rie

Thank you so very much for this article. Most Iris fans have had their opinions, concerns and justified upset over the ugly and vile behavior of some in the Flash fandom tsk tsked away by other media outlets while trying to paint and insinuate that Candice’s coworker is the female on that show who is the bigger victim of hate, mysiogny and racism which is clearly a lie. Candice is doing an amazing job and her conduct and professionalism even before the first episode is to be commended.

  • MPaule77

Thank you so much, finaly an article about Iris West that I can read
with joy. I love Candice Patton and I love her work as Iris West

  • rednumber22

Thank you for this lovely article! You speak so much truth!

  • Nikki M

Candice is awesome! I really hope that she isn’t letting all the hate get to her personally. I commend her for being brave enough to take on this role. I only started watching this show because we finally get to see a black woman in a sci-fi/fantasy series that is a major player who is not a stereotype. I will continue to watch and support her no matter what.

    • Brandon Manley

You are the other kind of racist that instead of seeing her as an actress you see her as a “black woman” taking the role of a white woman and calling her “brave” for doing so. Sorry to burst your bubble. Think better.

      • beck0974

She’s a black woman. Noting wrong with acknowledging that. Pretending as if her race isn’t a factor. The producers told her to stay off the internet after she was cast. They didn’t do that because “she’s an actress”.

        • brandofthesand

It shouldn’t be a factor. The fact that the producers told her to stay off the internet due to irrational hate comments is indicative of how little the human race has come in terms of equality and rational thought. And yeah, I think there is something wrong with wanting to acknowledge her skin color. Its like when people, instead of saying “that guy”, they will say “that black guy” because “that guy” just wasn’t descriptive enough for him, but that same person wont feel the need to say “that white guy” because they are white and therefore everyone knows he is referring to a guy of the same race as him. Its small things like that, that squeak by under the radar and people don’t call them out on it because hey, why would you? I’m just wondering when we can all be guys and gals without the need to pull out racial descriptors. I’d much rather be referred to as “the guy with the stupid face” than “that white guy”.

          • Shana Moore

It shouldn’t matter but it does. If you were a black woman and never saw black women represented in comics (or rarely) you’d be excited too. But I guess you can’t take on another perspective.

          • Kendall

Unfortunately the world doesn’t work that way, we are defined by our skin color and background no matter what and poc carry this burden more than anyone. And, btw why is it a problem when one poc is proud of another poc? The fact that you think that shows how “liberally” ignorant and fake “I’m not racist” you come off as

      • Nikki M

She’s brave because she accepted the role knowing the kind of hate she would receive from ignorant people like you. Clearly your perception of her is clouded by your misguided perceptions of who you think black women are.

  • nunyabeeswax

The actress is not at fault. She is doing the best she can with the horrible lines her character is given. The writers have made the character utterly unlikeable. The character, as written, is selfish, needy, self centered.

    • Winda June

Agree with you. Candice is pretty and did a good job. I just don’t like the character, so selfish and needy. She thinks she’s the sun and everything is revolve around her. I really hate the scene when Joe’s taken by Grodd and she blame Caitlin and Cisco for having all remarkable stuff at STAR labs but couldn’t save her father. And how she puts a burden and guilt to Barry. I really want to punch her face.
I hope she’s just a superheroes first love, you know like Gwen Stacy and then die. She’s so freaking annoying.

      • Mecha

Sorry, but she is supposed to marry the flash 🙁

      • Goophina

None of what you said describes Iris West. In fact we’ve been shown the opposite. Iris went out of her way to hunt down the flash for who? Barry, her bestfriend. Because she felt that he was giving on up on finding his mother’s killer and proving his father’s innocence. Then her priorities shifted when she realized that the Flash was giving the people of central city hope. For the nine months that Barry’s been in a coma, metahumans had been causing havoc in central city. No one knew what was happening or how to stop it. Now all of a sudden a heroes shown up, cleaning up central city. Iris wanted to give back hope to the people of central city and let them know that someone was out there watching their back and fighting the battles that they could not. When Iris was hired at Central City News, unaware that they only wanted her to report on flash related stuff, she wanted to write about shelters for battered women. Showing again that she cares about the people of central city. Not just the flash. How many times has Iris complemented and told Barry/Flash that she believes in him??? Other than Henry, Iris was the only person to ever believe him about his mother’s death. That had to be a great comfort to Barry growing up and everyone was calling him crazy. The minute Iris felt that Barry was giving up on ever proving the impossible, she went and tried to prove it for him. Iris has always asked how Barry was doing, if he was okay, how was his day. Of course he could never answer her because it involved Flash related stuff. Iris even canceled a date to go with Barry to see the particle accelerator. Although she isn’t interested in science and tech like Barry is, she still makes time to share in his interests.

It seems you picked one episode to describe the entirety of Iris’s character. Number one, in that episode Iris was pretty wound up and unfocused. She just found out that her best friend and father, two of the closest people in her life, had been lying to her face and treating her like an infant. Now her father’s just been kidnapped by a murderous gorilla. She blew up and that’s understandable. Even Cisco and Caitlin understood that she was under a lot of stress and fear. She buckled down and actually saved Barry’s life.

If you’re gonna base one episode, one scene even to describe the entirety of someones character then let’s do the same with other characters. Barry for instance. Barry must be a real a**whole for blowing up at Joe and telling this man who loved and raised him as his own son that he wasn’t his father. Bringing Joe to tears. No matter what Barry has done or will do, he will always be considered a jerk for this moment. That’s basically what you’re doing with Iris’s character. Erasing and ignoring all her good qualities and forever pinning her as this bad person for breaking down in an emotional moment.

Iris West is in fact a selfless person. That’s been shown time and time again. Does she have moments where her negative emotions overtake her??? Yes, but so does every other character on the show. Why make Iris the only bad guy for doing what all the other characters do??? Iris has been shown to be positive and incredibly caring.

No she won’t be a simple fling. In the comics Iris West is Barry Allen’s wife and mother of his children. Both Iris West and Barry Allen spawn the flash family. She is more like Mary Jane than Gwen Stacy as well as Lois Lane. Unlike them though, a generation of speedsters descend from Iris West. So she will be on the show until the end.

        • ted

Dear, you do love to ramble. Arguing that Iris is not self-centered is pointless. She makes everything about her, regardless of how it affects other people. Other characters, typically Cisco or Caitlin or first and foremost Joe, don’t. She toys with Barry’s feelings because she’s too immature to figure out her own, demands complete obedience from Eddy who adores her, and consistently refuses to adopt any other point of view than her own. Just because she is arguably pretty and acts like a little fairy princess doesn’t make the sun shine out of her nose. That you find excuses for her Homecoming Queen-like selfish obliviousness says a lot about how you must behave in your own life. To the pleasure of never having to prove you wrong again, have a great life, ciao.

          • im kk

I agree! She makes me sick! Plus, her acting is really bad!

          • Kendall

And Caitlin is a boring, stiff, lifeless caricature of a nerdy white girl but let’s not throw stones

  • danny

i dont understand why the cw does this, danielle was a perfect iris, she even looks like the comic and then they go and cast a black girl??? like whuuuut. and im very sorry but iris is anoyining to the point that i dont what to watch the flash because i dont want to sit through her boyfriend crap or how she always says stuff to make barry feel inadequate but most of all they do look like good friends and i dont see any romantic chemistry at all

    • beck0974

Yeah, and if Danielle played the part, she’d still have all that writing that you find annoying, so it’s not really about that. It’s because Candice is black. It’s OBVIOUS that’s why Candice’s Iris bothers you so much.

    • Lainie H

Yo Danny, Barry from the show doesn’t look anything like Barry from the comics but you don’t seem to have a problem with that do you? Oh yeah because at least he’s still white huh? And if you think Iris is annoying you do know that a different actress wouldn’t change the character right? So if you truly find her annoying you would still find her annoying no matter who plays her. But it’s obvious “annoying” is just an excuse to hate her because you don’t like the fact that she’s being played by a black women. My advice to you is either stop watching the show or get the hell over it because Iris West is here to stay.

    • Alexis

Dude you are transparent as hell and racist as fuck. So according to you Danielle is a perfect Iris but Iris is annoying? So which one is the truth. If Iris is so annoying how is Danielle going to change that except for being white. Your issue with Iris is that actress is not white. I suggest that you quit the show and take your ignorance elsewhere. Your bigotry is not needed nor appreciated. Bye!

  • Matthew Beastie

I am mixed race. Racism has nothing to do with how much i find iris annoying. Her acting sucks and they wrote her as a spoiled and entitled little princess whose whole existence is to antagonize everyone and make barry feel guilty. The flash asked her not to write about him but she did anyway. Not to mention she and barry have zero chemistry. She appears to be 10 years older than him. But she pairs just fine with her detective bf who is white. Black is not the pdoblem; Zoe was a beloved character on firefly.

    • beck0974

Her acting is fine, and the only reason you assign “entitled” to her is because she’s a black woman. I bet you think she’s “uppity”, too. And I find it HILARIOUS that you’re trying to come out herr and say Candice looks 10 years older than Barry. Yeah, if you think Barry looks 15. Unlike some folks, black people don’t age like cheese. Black doesn’t crack and your “mixed race” self needs to quit.

      • kory

Dumbest thing I’ve read. Ever. Congratulations, dumbass.

        • beck0974

          Truth hurts, bitch.

    • kareem ruiz

People that hate Iris is racist.

      • Xarias

        They sure is.

    • BloggerDatabase

Agree. I stopped watching the show because of how Iris West was being written.

    • Goophina

People were already putting information about the flash on the internet. Iris just gathered all that information into one place, her blog. The flash/Barry didn’t care about those other people writing about him, he just cared about Iris. Besides Iris’s reason for continuing to write about the flash were noble. She firstly did it for Barry because she felt that he was giving up on ever finding his mother’s killer and freeing his father. She did this for Barry. Barry was giving up on proving the impossible so she went out and tried to prove it for him. Then she realized that the Flash was a beacon of hope. For the nine months that Barry was in a coma, metahumans had been causing havoc in the city. It must have been a nightmare for people who didn’t know what was happening or how to stop it. Now the flash has come and started to fight the battles that they could not. Iris wanted the people of central city to know that someone was out there watching their back. That they had someone they could depend on. Iris has been shown to be incredibly selfless. Iris is stubborn and doesn’t discard her beliefs easily which is a good quality. She’s firm and steadfast in her faith, someone Barry can and does rely on.

In the comics the Flash is extremely beloved by his city. Iris is beginning to be a major component in this happening in the show. She’s writing about all his good deeds and rallying the love of the people for him. In the season 2 premiere we are beginning to see the fruits of all of this, by them having a flash day. A day to show their appreciation of the flash. Now who do you think started all this?? Iris West, Barry/flash’s number one supporter.

If race doesn’t come into play when you judge a character then good, but there are others who do hate Iris West because she is played by a black woman.

  • Brandon

Oh shut the fuck up. It has nothing to do with her being black. She’s an annoyingly written character. End of story.

  • percy blakeney

This is a dreadfully written character that exists only as the object of the hero’s affection. She has no redeeming qualities. Even her job is given to her only because she’s got an inside line on The Flash. She is entirely defined by her will she/won’t she love triangle and as a result becomes a catalogue of supposedly feminine vices. You are being myopic if you can’t see that this sort of thing is an offensive portrayal of women on television.
I have no problems with the performance by Candice and whilst I’m sure there are some racist scumbags out there, there always are, tarring everyone who objects to this horrible character with that brush is extremely offensive and a disservice to fair criticism and ultimately to drama itself.

    • beck0974

But I bet you love Patty this season, and Llinda last season, huh? both women defined by who they’re linked to.

      • percy blakeney

No. Both of those characters appeared to have some promise on their initial appearance but were quickly written into a dead end of TV romance cliches-besides being defined by being Barry’s squeezes they were also, very obviously, never more than Iris-alternatives.
On the brighter side of things the Barry-Iris angle has been downplayed immensely in Season 2 and she’s been far less irritating as a result (though sadly there still isn’t much positive to be said).

  • Bonnie Bennett

Barry and Iris have such good chemistry, you’re blind if you don’t see it. It sucks they haven’t given her a solid story line besides being Barry’s love interest which is dumb as fuck because she’s the LEAD female. Candice is beautiful and the hate she receives is so petty and unnecessary and she handles it so well.

  • Nikki M

I love Candice Patton on this show! She is an amazing actress. You are right that we don’t see enough of Iris’ perspective. Hopefully, they will give us more of that next season. It’s so important that you’re putting this out there.

  • the hate for me is NOT a Racial one …
but the fact that she is a
conniving *censored* as evidenced at her sabotaging his asian girlfriend
when she found out they were official ; when the time travel *first
time* episode happened and he told her he was flash YOU CLEARLY SAW SHE
WOULD DROP EDDIE IN A HEART BEAT then he went back in time ; iris as a
character does nothing but promote angst in barry and i have yet to see
someone defend her as a GOOD PERSON on the show (since every female*
even though they are white* contributes on a positive level to the
    world) .

Iris is the Flash equivelant of Laurel and any one who
says Laurel is a good person on Arrow really needs to back that claim up
    with evidence .

    • Goophina

Iris’s feelings for Barry at that time were on a subconscious level. Meaning, she wasn’t yet aware that she had feelings for Barry and acted on them subconsciously. First off, why did Linda go behind Barry’s back to get information on him anyways? Second, Iris never told Linda that it was her Barry had feelings for. Linda was smart enough to put two and two together. Thirdly, Iris was telling Linda not to give up on Barry. She essentially told her that Barry was getting over someone else and that he needed time. Fourthly, Linda should’ve have taken that advice and done the opposite of what Iris wanted her to which was run away as far as away from Barry as she could because guess what? The minute Barry found out Iris had feelings for him, he dropped Linda so freaking fast and then went to ask Iris out right smack dab in front of Linda not a second after ending things with her. That was extremely tacky on Barry’s part. Barry’s and Linda’s relationship was doomed from the start and it was all Barry’s fault. Linda didn’t like the fact that Barry couldn’t make time for her and decided that they just wouldn’t do. But Barry stupidly tried to get her into a relationship with him anyways despite 1. still having feelings for Iris (and as we can see he dropped Linda to the curve the minute Iris gave the okay) and 2. being the flash which would mean that he couldn’t really make time for Linda. Barry had to leave Linda hot and heavy due to flash related business. He couldn’t guarantee Linda that he wouldn’t have to run off again many times because of flash duties. Unless he was going to reveal his secret to her which was a no no.

Iris confessed her feelings for Barry before she found out he was the flash. Iris realized that she had feelings for Barry before she found out he was the flash. Iris was ready to drop Eddie for Barry before she found out he was the flash. Iris had/has feelings for Barry, not his flash persona. She chose Barry not the flash.

Iris is Barry’s number one supporter. Iris constantly compliments Barry and tells him how wonderful he is. In the episode with Grodd, it was Iris’s voice, Barry’s love for her and all the faith that she has in him that saved his life. The only one who rivals Iris’s faith in Barry is his father Henry. We have seen that Barry relies heavily on the faith that Iris has in him, because it is immense and unwavering. Even in the season two premiere, we get a glimpse of Barry’s perfect world and what is Iris doing?? She’s telling him that he gives people hope. In Barry’s perfect world, Iris is still instilling him with confidence.

Iris went out of her way to hunt down the flash for who? Barry, her bestfriend. Because she felt that he was giving on up on finding his mother’s killer and proving his father’s innocence. Then her priorities shifted when she realized that the Flash was giving the people of central city hope. But yet when a white female character does the same thing nobody says a word. Iris is not perfect but she’s HUMAN she can have both good and bad qualities but apparently women of men of Iris’ skin tone are seen as less than human by a lot of fans

    • in reply to this comment by kendall…, you are aware that she is A HORRIBLE individual right . you really think she does anything for anyone . for fox sake , all the episodes with her just hammer my point home. aside from laurel there is no other character who is as destructive to the rest of the cast . i cited several instances which show she is a horrible person. barry is the forever punchingbag * and this season with her saying I WAS ALWAYS YOURS was a kick in eddies teeth* . every other female character including his ASIAN FIXATION were just as strong, just as independent, but none of them were twofaced at all . hell not even GYpSIE was a total c word. why all of a sudden was JOE ok with barry and her , but NOT eddie and her *spare me the partner card* cus that was bullcrap.

BTW ,you still havent cited evidence of her GOODNESS . so please provide evidence .

  • Joe I.

I don’t get this article at all. What does Iris’ race have anything to do with anything. The actress is incredibly beautiful. Her performance is excellent. But the character she portrays is dreadful. Iris comes off as such an entitled bitch. That’s how the writers, knowingly or unknowingly, portray her. Barry expresses his love for her. In the next scene at Joe’s house, she’s sitting on the lap of her boyfriend when Barry comes home. It seems like she’s throwing her relationship in his face. She seems to go out of her way to kiss her boyfriend at the police station in front of Barry. When Barry gets a girlfriend, she immediately tried to undermine it in numerous ways. She, somehow, gets a “real” job as a journalist and doesn’t seem to be writing anything. She comes and goes as she please. On more than one occasion, her boss comes to her to talk but she tells him it’s not a good time. Who does that. When her boyfriend is keeping secrets from her, instead of discussing it in private, she makes a big scene in front of A,T.O.M. And guests and storms out, even though A.T.O.M. paid a lot of money to have the restaurant all to themselves. Then, instead of working on her her problems like an adult, she goes running home like a child. Her boyfriend seems to be a terrific guy. Barry seems to be a nice guy guy who is a little naive and misguided. But what are Iris’ good qualities? It seems that Barry and her boyfriend deserve someone who is much nicer, empathic and caring than Iris.

    • Goophina

What does race have to do with the Iris hate?? Maybe because the hate began as soon as it was announced that Iris West would be played by a black woman. Every website I went on to find news about the flash had comments saying that this Iris West is a fake and she needs to be white with red hair. Iris West since then has been referred to as n*****, c***, b****, used goods for sleeping with her boyfriend, monkey, and I’ve even seen pics of Candice Patton where her skin and hair color have been changed. Candice Patton has even received racial slurs on her twitter and her Instagram.

What was Iris supposed to do??? Allow herself to be in discomfort because Barry chose to confess his feelings right when she made the decision to move in with another guy?? Was she supposed to let the guy she’s currently with feel discomfort for Barry’s sake as well?? Iris clearly didn’t want Eddie to know so if he pulled her onto his lap, she’s not going to get up. Iris doesn’t go out of her way to kiss her boyfriend in front of Barry?? Like how?? Iris knowingly tried to undermine Barry’s relationship in one instance and we later find out that it was because she had realized she had feelings for him as well. Barry actually tried to kill Iris’s boyfriend and has tried to flirt with her as the flash. Iris is not at fault and shouldn’t have to walk on eggshells because Barry decided to tell her he loved her after fourteen years just when she is about to move in with her boyfriend. That’s on Barry. Even Barry understood this.

Mason isn’t her boss, he’s her mentor/partner. The writer’s didn’t really focus on Iris and career. But they said they are doing so in season 2.

Eddie was growing distant with Iris. Iris felt this distance and repeatedly asked him what was wrong. Instead of coming up with a good excuse Eddie continues to deny that anything is wrong. But Iris knows that he’s keeping something from her and now she knows he’s lying to her face about it. She began to fear that he was cheating on her. Still he wouldn’t say anything. Their relationship was slowing coming undone. Yet Eddie refused to do anything about it because he couldn’t tell Barry’s secret. So Iris decided to go home until he was ready to talk. Would you have sat quietly by and let your relationship crumble??

You asked what are Iris’s good qualities. The show has shown them time and again. You and others however want to only focus on her moments where she gives into negative emotions.

Iris went out of her way to hunt down the flash for who? Barry, her bestfriend. Because she felt that he was giving on up on finding his mother’s killer and proving his father’s innocence. Then her priorities shifted when she realized that the Flash was giving the people of central city hope. Showing again that she cares about the people of central city. Not just the flash. How many times has Iris complemented and told Barry/Flash that she believes in him??? She’s always uplifted Barry and let him know that he was wonderful. Iris extended her friendship to Caitlin, Cisco, and Wells for saving Barry’s life. Iris is an incredibly positive person and always has a smile on her face. One that Barry can’t seem to get over and runs by jitters just to see.

Is Barry forever a jerk for yelling at Joe, the man who love and raised him, that he wasn’t his father? Bringing Joe to tears. How about when he got mad at Cisco for building the cold gun which was an incredibly smart thing to do. How about when Barry didn’t so much as offer a kind word when the woman Cisco had grown to like died and Barry dropped her body in the ocean. He just walked right by him. How about when Barry didn’t seem to care that Cisco was about to be killed for a second time. He didn’t even ask if he was alright afterwords. Barry has had his bad moments and his good moments the same as Iris. Heck even Caitlin (though that was the writer’s screwing with her character). Barry is a nice guy, but he can be a jerk sometimes. But nobody still considers Barry a jerk to this day and nobody erases his good qualities. But with Iris, everybody focuses on her low moments and is blind to her good qualities and good moments. Iris is selfless, sweet, incredibly caring, kind, warm, positive, energetic…..like this is the Iris that the show has shown. But people who insist on always disliking Iris will view all her moments in a negative like and won’t deign to look at her point of view and understand what she was feeling and how she was assessing a situation and how she was reacting to a scenario. And they will blind themselves to all her good deeds and qualities.

Who gives a shit what some racist dumb asses say. If people would stop throwing gas on their fire then there would cease to be further problems. Just disregard what they say, move on and get to the real issues. She is a great actress, She is gorgeous, helpful, caring… she is also shallow, self-centered, idiotic and passive aggressive. She can somehow tell her boyfriend is keeping something from her but hadn’t figured out Barry was in love with her from the moment they met? And when he was keeping something from her, (Eddie) And Barry gave her a perfectly valid reason why he would do so, she gives him an ultimatum of either tell me what it is, (even if it was “I fished a couple heads out of a toilet”) or shes gonna put on her boots made for walkin’. As for Barry flirting with her as the flash… So what? Pretty sure she was doing the same thing with him and keeping it from Eddie.

The point I’m trying to make here is that it has nothing to do with the actress, her race, or her ability to portray the character. The writers, whether they meant to or not made her out to be a bit of a bitch.

And sorry to all of you snowbarry fans, that shit aint happening, nor is felicity gonna smoke Barry’s pipe. Its gonna be Iris, it always was and if you are one of those racists that says she “has to be” white with red hair… you are a turdburger in need of a vasectomy or a Tubal ligation to keep your spawn from gunking up the earth further with your inane points of view.

        Drop the mic.

There’s no point in trying to reason with Goophina. Everything is how she sees it, and she can’t be convinced of anything else, no matter how rationally or clearly you lay it out for her.

          • Shana Moore

And there’s no reasoning with you all. You dismiss it without trying to empathize. Putting yourself in someone else’s shoes. Try another perspective for once.

          • Also Known As

That’s rich; I’m an actor, empathy is part of my job.

            Try again.

    • Johnny Moua

i definitely agree with you 100%. race has nothing to do with who berry marries or not. when i first saw her my instant thought was “oh she’s cute”. now that i see her im just thinking, OHHHH GAWWWD she’s fuckin annoying. the part i wanted to just knock her teeth out was when she was pushing and pushing her boyfriend to tell her what he’s hiding, or she would rage like a little 1 year old. just annoys me for the fact that she couldn’t just be patient about it and let him tell her when he’s ready. otherwise, who fucking cares. if he’s not cheating, the stop nagging bitch.

      • Shana Moore

So if your significant is hiding something but not cheating it’s fine? I think you’d wanna know what was up to.

      • im kk

Lol I agree! Her character is a selfish, annoying, big headed bitch! She wouldn’t even be a reporter or have a job if it wasn’t for the flash. I can’t stand her!

    • Sterling7

I’m genuinely sorry if the actress who plays Iris is getting hatred, but I agree, the character is *terrible*. In much the same way that Dawn in “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” (another much-fan-hated character): “Everyone keeps focusing on all these people who are dying and things that threaten to end the world; why won’t they just put everything aside and pay attention to MEEEEEE?!”

      • Perfect example!! I wanted Dawn to die the moment she showed up as a fake ass sister but I love the actress that played her dance with iris

  • Maine Lyn

I disagree. I like Candice Patton as an actor, but the way the writers wrote Iris in the show (Giving her another love interest who conveniently dies, have Barry hopelessly in love with her with seemingly no chance of getting with her, elaborating on the love triangle) irritated me. Iris West has a lot more potential than this.

I don’t think it’s fair of you to say Caitlin Snow is an unremarkable character. Danielle Panabaker did a great job as a likable, supportive friend. I don’t ship SnowBarry (I like Caitlin + Ronny), but it’s undeniable (in the karaoke scene especially) that Barry and Caitlin are good friends. She’s about to get a lot more interesting in the next season too.

From a different perspective, I believe that some fans dislike Candice Patton as Iris West because the ccomic book character was a pale redhead and they wanted Iris to be exactly like in the comics. I don’t think that’s racist at all.

I’m not hating on you , but I do want to explain that my dislike of Iris isn’t because of her skin color, it’s because she’s a poorly written character in this season.

    • kory

Needy, whineyx guilt tripper. She honestly ruins this awesome show.

      • Goophina

Are you talking about Iris or Caitlin?? Either way you are just making stuff up. When did either of these women whine or guilt trip somebody?? Seriously what scene was this. Otherwise you are literally making stuff up.

        • Brandon Manley

S1: E18 Iris gives Eddie an ultimatum. And she whines about him not telling her what it is the ENTIRE episode. Its why I’m on here right now. People need to have some things to themselves. Even in a relationship. If she truly loved him, (which she didn’t)…(at least not in that way) She would look past it and let him tell her in his own time if he chose to.

          • Maria Leamon

But didn’t Barry sort of lead Felicity on and never contact her, even after he woke up from his coma? Caitlin is now flirting with Jay even though it is only been six months since her husband died ( my husband died in November of last year and I can tell you you don’t move on that quickly). Iris is grieving do Jessie and has always told Barry that she was with Eddie even though she was fascinated by the Flaah and flirted with him. She cut it out and he kept flirting with her anyway. She was not leading Barry on at all. They have been best friends and lived with each other for years and have are really touchy feely with each other. When she found out that he was lying to her about being the Flash she got upset because he is supposed to be friends with her and everyone else knew. She always realized people were keeping things from her when she asked them about Ronnie and they lied to her. So I would start to get a little irritated too. I think all of the characters are written in the series honestly because characters in comics normally are written as being perfect and we humans are not perfect at all. We let emotions rule us so who knows how anyone would actually react to any of these situations. That is what always cracks me up about these kind of discussions…these are characters who are not real.

          • Brandon Manley

You have made some pretty good points.
I could see her getting irritated knowing everyone is keeping something from her. But her naivety about Barry’s infatuation is pretty ridiculous. As far as Caitlyn’s attraction for Jay goes, I think it will be cut short with a lot of guilt on her part when firestorms better looking half somehow rises from the ashes again.
One thing, Comic book characters are usually very flawed, Not only emotionally and mentally, but physically as well.
Heroes with lost parents, troubled pasts, grotesque mutations, the inability to ever touch someone without inflicting harm, drug addiction, alcoholism, blindness, ect… The list goes on and on.
So I don’t really see what you mean when you say they are written as being perfect.

          • Maria Leamon

I agree but I blame the writers for that. The issue I have with al all male writing team is that women are written from their perspective. Like Laurel being the Iris of Arrow. Thea was always a mess and now it is even worse. Felicity is a nerd dream. If you go by just her actions she would look kind of slutty. Especially what she did to Ray… I mean she cheated on him with Oliver. They were not officially broken up when she started pursuing Oliver. It’s sad that there cannot be a more diverse writing team.

          • Brandon Manley

Couldn’t agree more. I can also say that has pretty much been the standard for comic books. Women are portrayed from a males prospective and men are written bigger than life. Hell, I cant think of a superheroine that didn’t have a slutty costume other than the invisible woman. And in the movie she was portrayed by Jessica Alba and had to take her clothes off to go invisible before they found out the suits would change with them. A little diversity in the writers room would go a long way to at least attempting a believable female character. They are doing a damn fine job with Cisco though. I have odds on him being the breakout character of this series.

          • Maria Leamon

Cisco was the breakout character to me last season. I cannot wait to see how Vibe is fleshed out.

          • brandofthesand

One of the most underrated superheroes in my opinion. And now that they have also made him a super tech genius he will only become more of a threat to speedsters. He may even have a kickass showdown with Prof. Zoom because he is supposed to be able to disrupt the speed force. His sonic powers are vibrational just like speedsters which leaves room for a ton of funny stuff to happen between him and Barry when he is figuring out his abilities.

          • Maria Leamon

Which is what Wells intended. 🙂

          • brandofthesand

aaaaahaaaaaa! The foot is a game!

          • Maria Leamon

I think it would be amazing to see him take on Zoom.

  • luluz

I don’t know I find her annoying too…. the actress that played as plastique would have been a better Iris West. Plus she is prettier…

    • Goophina

How do you know that the actress who played plastique would have been a better Iris?? Because of her looks? What do you find annoying about the current Iris West? The fact that she’s black or how she’s written. Because it just seems that you don’t like that she’s black. If the girl who played plastique played Iris West then she would still be written the exact same way. So it would seem that you have a problem with Candice Patton’s skin tone. This is what I’ve gleaned from your post. Tell me if I’m wrong.

      • beck0974

The actress that played Plastique couldn’t play Plastique with her wooden line delivery and inability to emote.

  • BloggerDatabase

My main problem with Iris West on The Flash is her stupid ‘plot’. Her dialogs are also terrible. TERRIBLE. For example, at the beginning of Season 1, Episode 6, watch it and you’ll realize how annoying Iris West is.

PS: Although I think Candice is really pretty, Gustin is prettier than her, that’s making their ‘chemistry’ not work.

  • Steve

Could care less that she’s black, but from what I’ve seen of her character is just annoying.

[SPOILER ALERT]: Her reaction to her boyfriend’s keeping secrets is annoying, She knows his work, she knows his work requires keeping secrets lest he get fired/jailed or endanger himself and others, like her, yet she throws a strop over him “not telling her everything”.
It’s sorta childish and pathetic. [END SPOILER]

I have absolutely no problem with the actress, she seems capable enough, great, she’s easy on the eyes to, good for her.

    The CHARACTER is the issue.

trying to make it about race is a disservice and seems more an issue for the article than in reality.

    • Goophina

Eddie didn’t tell Iris that the secret was work related. He could have but he didn’t. The issue was that Iris felt Eddie growing distant with her. It was so bad that she thought he might have been cheating on her. All Eddie would say was that he wasn’t keeping anything from her, but she knew that he was lying to her face. What was she supposed to do? Let Eddie continue to grow distant and be let their relationship tank?

You can’t erase the fact that many people just don’t like that Iris West is being played by a black girl. Heck, Candice Patton was told not to go online for a while after they released that Iris West would be black because they knew how bad the backlash would be. Before the show even started people hated her character and that hate probably clouds their view of all the good qualities of the character. I’ve seen many posts referring to Iris West as n*****, b****, c***, black b****, used goods for sleeping with her boyfriend, monkey. Even Candice Patton has received racial slurs on her twitter and Instagram. The hate has majorly died down since then, but do you seriously think that all those people who said such awful things are really chill??

When I see comments about Iris West saying that she’s annoying, stupid, selfish, a b**** for not immediately screwing Barry, and they can’t offer up any scenes or examples then I’m left to wonder. Especially when Iris West is hated for making mistakes and yet the other characters on the show can make a mistake or have a bad moment and there’s never a peep. Why is the hate so disproportional?? Why can the other characters on the show get away with stuff but Iris West is put under a spotlight and poked and prodded and twisted until her character is unrecognizable. Iris West has many good qualities and moments. She’s also had her bad moments, but they don’t define the entirety of her character. Just like the other characters on the show. They have their good and bad qualities and moments, but fans and watchers of the flash don’t define the entirety of their character by those few moments like they do with Iris West.

Their are people with legitimate issues with Iris West’s characters just like all the other characters on the show. But in Iris West’s case those voices of reason are few and far. I mostly run into comments wishing that she would just die. Not get better. No, they don’t hope for better writing for the character. They just want her character to be done away with once and for all. Iris West, matriarch of the flash family. Barry Allen’s lightning rod.

      • Also Known As

You can’t control other people’s racist and bigoted reactions. It’s unfortunate that Ms. Patton received that response, but what many of the commenters take issue with here is that their dislike of Iris has NOTHING to do with her race, but people are making it about that anyway.

I found this article because I was almost done with the first season and was curious if anyone else hated her character as much as I did. And, to my surprise, there was already a lot of discussion about this. So let me tell you why I don’t like Iris, with some specifics:

        1) She’s manipulative and passive-aggressive. The way she goes behind Barry’s back and sabotages his budding romance with Linda Park is not cool, even if you rationalize it as “she wants Barry for herself, she’s confused about her feelings, blah blah blah”. I get that. But she’s in a serious relationship with another guy that adores her, and Barry is her childhood friend whom presumably she would want to see happy; what business has she, interfering in someone else’s business?

Or that dinner scene with Felicity and Ray (Atom), Barry, and Iris and Eddie. She spends almost the ENTIRE scene making snide, passive aggressive remarks about she and Eddie’s lack of communication. It’s too bad because as written, Eddie is a NICE guy, who is dedicated to her and to his job, a job that must entail keeping some things private. It’s one thing for her to decide that that sort of relationship isn’t what she wants, and then ending it–that would be the mature, ADULT thing to do–but instead she complains in a passive-aggressive way about her dissatisfaction in her relationship.

        2) She’s wishy-washy. In one episode she’s pining for Eddie; then she’s dating him and meets the Flash, and starts pining for him (at least, that’s what I got in the way Ms. Patton played those earlier scenes). Then Green Arrow shows up, and she’s openly DROOLING over him, even though she’s in a committed relationship and her boyfriend’s co-worker (Barry) is sitting right there to witness it. Then Barry reveals his true feelings, and all of a sudden she likes Barry.

I have compassion for Caitlin Snow, who clearly is attracted to Barry but is still coping with losing her fiance. And when that fiance returns, she largely forgets about Barry. I root for Caitlin because her love seems TRUE; as written, Iris’ love is all over the map, and I don’t trust her, and I don’t think Barry should either.

        3) She’s ungrateful and selfish. I totally respect her dislike at being lied to by all the people close to her, but the way she PUNISHES Barry and Eddie and her FATHER is beyond the pale. She finds out Barry is The Flash and then doesn’t like him, despite all the things he’s done for her and for the citizens of the city? Screw her. She makes it about herself, she can’t put aside her own wounded feelings to see things from their point of view. How childish is that?

        4) She’s DUMB. Compared to almost everyone else on the show, she contributes nothing of value. Caitlin Snow is brilliant, Felicity drops by every once in a while to be awesome and funny and nerdy and brilliant (and hot), Cisco, Wells…hell even Joe and Eddie’s boss sacrifices himself at one point, showing he belongs on that job. What does Iris do??? She’s a journalist, but spends most of her time at home or hanging out in the coffee shop where she used to work.

Contrast this with, say, Ben Urich in the “Daredevil” universe, who is always putting himself in danger because he is serious about his job (in the comics he exposes the main character’s secret identity in the press). There are SO many ways that the writers could utilize a journalist in a superhero story, and they’re doing none of it.

So no, it isn’t because Candice Patton is black that I hate Iris West; I’m Black myself, and I think she’s lovely and that she’s trying her best. But I’m a professional actor as well, and let me tell you, you can only be as good as the material you’re given. As charming as Patton is, she still can’t overcome the miserable ACTIONS and BEHAVIORS that the writers subject her to.

Sorry for the length but I hope that’s clearer for you.

        • Goophina

          1) Iris never went behind Barry’s back and intentionally sabotaged Barry’s relationship with Linda. Iris told Barry to his face that she didn’t think Linda was right for him. Let’s not forget all the times Barry flirted with Iris as the flash. One time he even asked if she and Eddie had broken up yet. Let’s also not forget how Barry wronged Linda. He lied to Linda just so she can date him. He manipulated Linda into dating him. And then he goes to ask Iris out not a second after breaking up with Linda right in front of her. The behavior that you hate Iris for is the same behavior that Barry has displayed, so why don’t you hate his character as well? Iris didn’t know that what Eddie was hiding could be related to his job. Barry was the one who told Iris that and it was only after she decided her and Eddie needed space. Eddie straight up lied to Iris’s face and you can clearly see that she saw through his lie. He was being distant with Iris and she couldn’t figure out why. Eddie keeping this secret was affecting his behavior and putting strain on their relationship. I agree that the way she behaved at the dinner scene wasn’t great but her feelings on this are valid.

          2) When does she start pining for the flash? We have never been shown Iris pining for the flash. Are you really taking Iris acting like a fan girl over Oliver seriously? It was a fun scene that highlighted how others view Oliver. What about when Eddie ogled Felicity right in front of Iris? Why are you taking Iris to task for behavior that other characters have exhibited? She didn’t suddenly like Barry. She’s always liked Barry. Even Joe has said that he knew Iris had feelings for Barry. Barry mentions that Linda isn’t the first girlfriend that Iris has had an issue with, alluding that Iris has always had feelings for Barry. She just wasn’t aware of them. Iris explained it herself. After Barry’s confession she couldn’t stop thinking about him and it made her mad. Then she realized she didn’t want to stop thinking about him. Her feelings for Barry started to surface after his confession but she couldn’t place them at first. I have issues with Caitlin’s character. When her fiance returns she’s gunhoe about helping him. But in the Crazy for You episode she gives up on Ronnie completely. And for no reason. At the time Caitlin didn’t know that Ronnie was fused with another person. All she knew was that he was a metahuman now. She stated that her purpose at Star Labs was to help the metahumans she helped create. However, now that her fiance is a metahuman she refuses to help him???? This man died for her. He loved her so much. When Caitlin saw him it was clear that he was suffering from severe psychological issues. He needed help. But she gave up on him for no reason. She didn’t forget about Barry when her fiance returned. She kissed Everyman who had disguised himself as Barry. And this was after Ronnie returned. I’d write more about some stuff about Caitlin’s character that I don’t like, but I’m not sure if you’ve started season 2 yet. Barry shouldn’t trust his best friend?

          3) When does Iris state that she doesn’t like Barry? When does she ever allude that she no longer likes her best friend???? And how exactly did Iris punish each of these men too much? You just said that you respect that she doesn’t like being lied to but then say screw her feelings???? And it was about Iris. Because Iris was the only one they were all lying to. Iris was the only one they were treating like an infant. And Iris not knowing the flash’s identity put her life in danger. She had every right to know that her life had been threatened. She had every right to know that her friend and mentor had just been murdered. There are people who know the flash’s identity. Meaning if they truly wanted to hurt Barry they would go after the woman he’s in love with. Iris. And Iris would be so completely unaware that someone was gunning for her. Barry actuallly mentions this in a deleted scene: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RAoYtHeSg54. You’re not making any sense in this paragraph.

          4) Iris isn’t a scientist like Caitlin, Cisco, and Wells and she isn’t a computer wizard like Felicity. What does looks have to do with anything? How does Joe and Eddie sacrificing themselves show that they are smarter than Iris??? Does Iris need to be in life threatening situations for her to be smart??? Or relevant???? You weren’t making sense awhile back, but now it’s just even more apparent. Daredevil and The Flash are two completely different shows. Iris was never trying to expose the flash’s identity. She was never after his identity. The flash isn’t a menace to society. When Iris does finally get hired at CCN, they want her to only write about the flash. So her options are limited. All in all, Iris and Joe West represent the average joe. Which would be you and me. Not everyone is going to be an expert in the fields that Caitlin, Cisco, Wells, and Barry are. It would be incredibly unrealistic to have every character in the show be a computer wizard like Felicity. That would take away something that’s special to Felicity’s character.

Iris West has been shown to be incredibly compassionate, selfless, kind, clever, spunky, etc. Although Iris isn’t into science and tech like Barry is, she canceled a date just to attend the reveal of the particle accelerator with him. Because he’s her best friend and she knew he was really excited about it. Clearly she makes time to share in Barry’s interests. When she first began blogging about the flash, who was she doing it for? Barry. She felt that Barry was giving up on ever catching his mother’s murderer and freeing his father. She felt that Barry was giving up on ever proving the impossible. So Iris decided to prove it for him. Now explain again how she’s selfish? When Iris saw all the good that the flash was doing she said she wanted to write about him to give back hope to the people of central city. For the nine months that Barry’s been in a coma, metahumans had used their powers to commit crimes. Nobody knew what was happening or how to stop it. Iris wanted to let the people of central city know that there was someone out there fighting the battles that they could not. Seriously, how does this describe a selfish person? Iris knows that the flash has enemies. She was kidnapped by Girder to draw out the flash. But did she stop writing about him? No. Even though she knows her life could be in danger. She believes that giving hope to others and helping Barry is too important to give up simply because her life is threatened. Both her dad and Barry tried to get her to stop. They said it was dangerous. But Iris dug her heels in and continued to do what she believed in. How does all of this describe a selfish person??? When Iris joined CCN, she wanted to write about shelters for battered women. Showing again just how much she cares for the people of Central City. However, Iris was unable to write about those things and was relegated to writing only about the flash. Because it was her reports on the flash that her bosses were interested in. Iris is tough as well. She punched Girder when he was regaining awareness and she shot the clock king saving not only herself but the entire police department as well. We found out that Iris had actually wanted to join the police force but didn’t due to interference from her dad. And Iris is clever as well. She secretly called Joe so that he could listen in on the Tricksters speech and he and Barry were alerted to the fact that Iris and many others had been poisoned.

Other than Henry, Iris was the only one to believe Barry about his mother’s death and that his father was innocent. Do you know how incredibly comforting that must have been to Barry growing up? Joe never believed Barry and Barry himself said that people called him crazy. So having one person on the outside believing in him must have been really uplifting. Iris has always done this. We’ve seen her constantly compliment Barry and telling him how much she believes in him. And we’ve seen Barry rely heavily on the endless faith that Iris has in him.

All in all you’re grossly exaggerating Iris’s behavior. Why? I don’t know. And you’re unfairly comparing her to other characters to explain why she doesn’t measure up. Why? I don’t know. Not only that but you’re condemning Iris for behavior that other characters have shown. Why? I don’t know. And you’re ignoring all the scenes that have displayed her good qualities in favor of forever pinning her with negative ones, but not doing the same with other characters. Why? I don’t know.

          • Also Known As

            1) WHY would Iris tell Barry that Linda isn’t right for him? What could she have gained from that? Within the context of the story it was CLEAR that her motives weren’t altruistic and more centered on keeping Barry away from any competition. This, while she is still in a serious relationship with Eddie Thawne. I would have loved to see a narrative play out about her internal struggles about who she loves more, and maybe see that generate conflict within the triangle, but that seems far too complex a story for what this show sets out to do. I mean they SORT OF touch on it, but very very lightly.

Your example of Barry’s supposed transgressions is flawed; the show is called The Flash, and it’s about Barry Allen. Because Barry is the hero, and is dedicated to helping others, and nearly runs himself ragged trying to do so, I LIKE and SYMPATHIZE with him. Iris hasn’t really done anything to win me over to her side, and she reminds me of Kim Bauer from “24”–usually just getting in the way of the more interesting plot/story.

I don’t think I said that her feelings at the dinner scene were invalid (and of course, nobody likes being lied to, either). I’m saying that the way she expressed those feelings was petty and passive-aggressive, and only served to make me dislike her even more.

It’s not Candice Patton, it’s not that it’s a Black woman, it’s because of how poorly the story is being told.

            2) Where did you get that she always liked Barry? The show, via Joe, TELLS me that, but I, as an audience member, never SAW it. What the show SHOWED me was a woman who was oblivious to Barry’s feelings and building a life that never included Barry as a romantic interest. It’s not a well-developed storyline, IMO–all of a sudden I’m just supposed to believe that she’s always liked Barry? Nonsense. Especially when you consider that the other female characters on the show have not been shy at expressing their interest in Barry. It just makes it hard for me to know how Iris really feels. It’s one thing to make a character hard to read on purpose–see Harrison Wells–it’s another to do so because of sloppy writing.

It’s not Candice Patton, it’s not that it’s a Black woman, it’s because of how poorly the story is being told.

            3) There is a point late in the season, after Iris learns Barry’s secret, that she scolds him by saying “I don’t even know who you are anymore”.

“Meaning if they truly wanted to hurt Barry they would go after the woman he’s in love with.” If The Flash’s enemies don’t know how close he is to Iris, then they’re less likely to target her. Hence keeping his identity a secret. I’m willing to forgive everyone for lying to her because they did it for what they thought were the right reasons…because they’re the GOOD GUYS.

And why do you think that scene was deleted?? They cut it because they didn’t think it essential to the narrative they had to tell, given the time allotted.

            4) You don’t understand context, which is more readily apparent here. I used Ben Urich not as a direct comparison of what Iris SHOULD be; I used it as an example of how a reporter could be integrated into a super hero narrative, to give them a focus and function that keeps them connected to the main story/character in a meaningful and positive way. She advanced the story more effectively as a blogger than as a journalist IMO.

None of my criticisms erase Iris’ good qualities (which are more a demonstration of Ms. Patton’s persona more than the writing, IMO). I’m addressing the simple question of why people don’t like Iris, and why her race has NOTHING to do with it. Even in your overlong reply, you didn’t mention her Blackness ONE f*cking time.

The issues are based in HOW THE STORY IS BEING TOLD. We all WANT to root for Iris, but the writers make it very, VERY difficult.

          • @cliftonduncan:disqus using evidence in the show to Prove the PersonAlity of iris west ,actually CITED stuff … you just gutted him and left him on the oPerating table breathing …
im glad you reacted to him ^^ . and i enjoyed reading your message .

now we just need barry to stay in the force for like 3 ePisodes in the next season *you know cus olly was only dead for one *

    • dude IM GLAD im not the only one who saw your evidence ,

      UGH .
and this season is no better.

  • Melanie Roblero

Thank you. There are so many people hating on Candice Patton and her character Iris. It is nice to read this article that says exactly what I think.

    • Also Known As

People are hating on Iris because, as written, she’s insufferable. You and the author are making it about her race, which is ridiculous.

A lot of people hated Betty Draper on “Mad Men”. She was a white woman that was a very unsympathetic character. A lot of people hated Anna Gunn’s character on “Breaking Bad”. These are both white women. It has to do with the STORYTELLING.

Let’s stop crying “racism” when that’s not the issue.

  • Pao Vang

Iris West is selfish. Everything is about her and she doesn’t really care about other character’s feelings or situations. She behaves like a spoiled rotten princess and that’s why people hate the character. The Flash fan that hates her most (a friend of mine) is mixed (black/white). Trust me it isn’t her skin tone. Its the character’s nasty personality.

    • Goophina

Iris has immense unwavering faith in Barry and we see that Barry relies on this faith heavily. She has shown that she is selfless and cares about Barry as well as the people of central city, people that she doesn’t even know personally. She even extended her friendship to Caitlin, Cisco, and Wells.

What about all of this sounds like a selfish spoiled rotten princess??? First off how is she spoiled? Point out scenes where we’ve seen that Iris is spoiled?? And selfish??

      • Pao Vang

Wow all that typing and you’re wrong on every count. Sucks 2 be you.

  • Mecha

I have absolutely zero issue with her being black, that didn’t even register as an issue to me. Lmao! I actually really like Patton and thinks she is super cute, I mean I wish I could pull off half the outfits she wears, but the character is very annoying, I can’t stand that she has absolute feelings. Meaning she either hates you or loves you but never mixed emotions. (Spoilers!) Its like when she finds out Barry is the Flash, she acts like he is evil, like he doesn’t care about Eddie even though time and time again he has proven that he cares about Eddie, even willing to break him out of the police station when he think he might go to prison, but instead she becomes super passive aggressive. She grew up with Barry, right? Why is now the time to start doubting and not just ask Barry straight up? He wouldnt lie to Iris if she told him she knew. It’s not as if he dresses as the Flash then kills people, no she knows that he has done a lot to save the city. I’m mad at the characters choices. She has this love/hate issue with everyone. I mean she kinda makes a scene and throws tantrums when she doesn’t get her way.

    • Goophina

What are you talking about?? Seriously, what are you talking about??

      • Mecha

Uh What are you talking about? That was literally the vague-st question ever. Its obvious you are going through this page and answering/arguing with everyone who doesn’t agree with you about this character , so I’ll reiterate. I like her, but I don’t like the way she is written. I have a lot of issues with the way some of the Flash is written, but I still enjoy it and look past what faults I think of or percieve and just enioy the show, I give zero fuqs about her skin color. Ok? Ok.

        • Goophina

Sorry for not clarifying. I wasn’t referring to whether you like her or not based on her skin color. I’m wondering when Iris insinuated to Barry that he doesn’t care about Eddie? As well as when Iris doubted Barry? Also when does Iris throw a tantrum when she doesn’t get her way? I can think of only one scene and that was at the dinner party when Eddie insisted on letting their relationship become stagnant. Could she have handled that better? Yes, but she shouldn’t be defined by this one instance. Barry has acted out in a burst of anger, but he’s not defined by it.

          • Mecha

Ah, well I never meant it as Iris thought Barry HATED Eddie but uh Barry did confess his love (technically twice ) for Iris so obviously there was underlying tension that neither of them admitted to. Then when Eddie is missing and Iris knows he’s the Flash she interpretes Barry not searching for Eddie every waking second as the Flash, as him not caring about Eddie and she throws yet another tantrum, instead of just saying” I know your the Flash, where’s Eddie?” She knows he won’t lie to her if she called him out on it because that’s not who Barry is but she sulks till she eventually just follows him to S.T.A.R. labs. Which ties into your tantrum quuestion. Yes I count the dinner party, and Eddie was not just letting the relationship grow stagnet, he couldn’t lie to Iris so he said nothing at all, because if he let one thing slip he knew he would tell her everything, which I don’t think would have been so bad. She does this pattern over and over. Leaving Eddie for a short while to force him to tell her what’s going on by going to her dad’s. I in no blame her for being pissed, but it’s not going to push me out of a home where I’ve moved all of my things, just to prove a point. I’d rather say I’ll stay till such and such time and if you can’t tell me what’s going on I’m moving out, that has more weight. She also did this when everyone begged her stop the blog. My point is Caitlyn has been lied to and. Etrayed also, her thinking her fiancee is dead then dr.wells lying, but she didn’t throw her hands in the air and stomp off. She but her big girl pants and was going to march over to dr.wells and ask him -although tactically that was dumb, she didn’t cry over it when Barry begged her not to.
I would have liked Iris a lot more as a character if she had figured it out through journalism, by pressing people for info and following them around. I mean Barry spends a lot of his extra time at S.T.A.R. labs and she even comments before she knows about the False identity that it all happened around the time the partical excelerator, how could she not connect the dots as a flipp’n journalist, I mean what do you think a CSI is doing hanging out a super advanced lab??? I wanted her to be more hungry for the story then aimlessly wondering around wondering why people around telling her all their secrets. Like I said I just wish she was written with less tantrum and more tenacity.

          • Goophina

I think I know which scene you’re talking about now. It’s in episode 21 right? When Iris visits Barry in his lab after Eddie was kidnapped? Iris was being cautious. She just found out that her best friend could possibly be the flash and has been sneaking around her for over a year. Barry has kept his identity secret from her. Like she said, she was finding it hard to trust him after learning about something so enormous being kept from her. Iris never expected that her best friend would keep something so enormous from her. She probably wanted to solidify her suspicions. Barry was deflecting her suggestions about getting the police in on the investigation and telling her father about Eddie’s disappearance. Yet Barry told her not to do anything and to just let the flash handle it. This is the same Barry who told her that the flash was dangerous and she should stop writing about him. How could he possibly have all this faith in him?? How could he, being apart of the police, tell her that the police shouldn’t get involved with the disappearance of one of their own officers. If she wasn’t sure at first, then she was now. She eventually did confront him. I liked how Iris subtlety questioned Barry without him knowing it. I really think she picked this trait up from her father who’s a detective. And it’s a good trait to have if you’re gonna be a journalist.

“I mean how cool would it have been if she followed him to a figt and saw him get unmasked. Like when he was fighting general Eiling and the girl who touched things and they became exsplosive (I cant remember her name).”

Could have been, but the writers didn’t write it that way.

“Yes I count the dinner party, and Eddie was not just letting the relationship grow stagnet, he couldn’t lie to Iris so he said nothing at all, because if he let one thing slip he knew he would tell her everything, which I don’t think would have been so bad, if her dad wasn’t his parnter, it would have made work and life a lot harder to tell than to just shut up.”

I agree that Iris handled that situation poorly, but from her perspective their relationship was going sour. I’m not talking about Eddie’s perspective, nor the we the viewers perspective. Look at all of this from Iris’s point of view. Eddie was being distant with her and she could tell that he was lying to her face. She questioned him, but he refused to open up to her. It was so bad she thought he was cheating on her. And Eddie did lie to Iris. She asked him if he was working with the flash and he said no. He could’ve said yes without revealing the flash’s identity, but he decided not to. Iris asked if he was hiding something from her and he said no. It was clear that Iris could tell he was lying. She said that Eddie was becoming distant with her and it was so bad that she thought he was cheating. What was she to do when her partner was lying to her face and refused to close the gap that he had caused?

“She does this pattern over and over. Leaving Eddie for a short while to force him to tell her what’s going on by going to her dad’s.”

Iris only did this once and it was because she thought Eddie might have been cheating on her. Her was being distant and secretive.

“I in no way blame her for being pissed, but a bump in a relationship is not going to push me out of a home where I’ve moved all of my things, just to prove a point. I’d rather say I’ll stay till such and such time and if you can’t tell me what’s going on by then, I’m moving out, till then you’re sleeping on the couch.”

We don’t know whether or not Iris did this. Eddie did say that they hadn’t been intimate in a while. Iris was fed up with Eddie’s lies and distance and decided to stay at her dad’s for the time being. Eddie’s a good guy, but he should’ve just said that he was working with the flash when Iris asked. He didn’t have to give up the flash’s identity. Nobody knows the flash’s identity so why would Iris believe that Eddie would?

“She also did this when everyone begged her stop the blog.”

I wrote about this once in great depth because many people disliked her for not stopping the blog when told. Barry and Joe both told Iris to stop doing something she was passionate about. She’s a grown woman and not obligated to listen to them. They put their lives in danger doing something they love so she should be allowed to do the same. But let’s consider the reason Iris didn’t stop writing about the flash. She sought out the flash first and foremost for Barry’s sake. She felt that Barry was giving up on ever catching his mother’s killer and freeing his father. She felt that he was giving up on proving the impossible. So she went out and tried to prove it for him. Then she realized that the flash was giving the people of central city hope. For the nine months that Barry was in a coma, metahumans had been causing crime all over central city. No one knew what was happening or how to stop it. Now that flash has shown up and is saving people. She wanted to the let the people of central city know that there was someone out there fighting the battles that they could not. She wanted the people of central city to know that there was someone they could rely on. This cause was to great for Iris to give up on simply because they told her to. She knew they worried about her safety, but she wasn’t doing it just for herself, but for Barry and the people of central city. Also to note, Iris’s blog began by pulling information about sightings of the red streak and putting them on her blog. Meaning there were a few other people who had written about the flash. She just took that information and gathered it all into one place. Also to note, in the comics the flash is extremely beloved by his city. He even gets his own museum. With the introduction of Flash Day in the season two premiere we begin to see this love from the comics transfer on to the screen. Iris was a big component of this happening. She was the first one to write about all his good deeds and was even hired at Central City News to continue keeping tabs on him. She rallied the hopes and love of the people of central city for the flash. So it’s a good thing she didn’t listen to anyone and stuck close to what she believed.

“My point is Caitlyn has been through stuff too, like her thinking her fiancee is dead then dr.wells lying, but she didn’t throw her hands in the air and stomp off. She put her big girl pants on and was going to march over to dr.wells and ask him face to face -although tactically that was a dumb move, but she didn’t cry over it when Barry begged her not to, she understood his side of the story and kept her mouth shut till the proof was in.”

Caitlin went to Wells’s after she asked for proof. She didn’t wait for Barry and co. to come up with proof. She took it upon herself to visit a possible murderers house and point blank ask him. This is a difference between Caitlin and Iris. Iris has been shown to have subtlety. Caitlin clearly does not. And it was an insanely stupid idea. She would have blown their cover and gotten herself killed. I’ve got other issues with Caitlin’s character (like how they wrote her fickle and desperate in crazy about you). Lacking subtlety doesn’t make Caitlin a bad character, it’s just a trait she doesn’t have. Another difference between Caitlin being lied to and Iris being lied to is that Caitlin wasn’t alone. She wasn’t made to feel like a fool. Everyone Iris knew was lying to her face for over a year. Her father, her best friend, her boyfriend, even Caitlin. Caitlin, Barry, and Cisco were all in it together. They weren’t isolated like Iris was. Nobody was treating her like an infant like Iris had been. Caitlin had also been dealing with Ronnie’s death for a long time. She didn’t put on any big girl panties. She had closed herself off and became distant. She rarely smiled. She was just going through the motions. She was grieving.

“I would have liked Iris a lot more as a character if she had figured problems out through journalism, by pressing people for info and following them around. I mean Barry spends a lot of his extra time at S.T.A.R. labs and she even comments before she knows about the False identity that it all happened around the time the partical excelerator blew up, how could she not connect the dots as a flipp’n journalist??”

The writers didn’t give Iris much POV last season. Something many of her fans were vocal about. However, the writers have said that they were going to focus on her journalism career this season. Remember, Barry is her best friend. She never expected him to keep something so big from her. That’s why she said she was having trouble trusting him later on. Also, Iris wasn’t really after the flash’s identity. She just wanted the people of central city to know that he existed. Finding out his true identity wasn’t a priority with her.

“I mean what do you think a CSI is doing hanging out at a super advanced lab???”

Barry was saved by the people of Star Labs. She knows that they’re friends. They all even hung out once. She also knows that Barry seriously looked up to Dr. Wells. It’s not a stretch to think that Barry would want to hang around this man he admired so much, as long as he was welcome. And whose to say that Iris knew that Barry had been hanging around Star Labs for most of his time. She doesn’t keep tabs on him.

“I wanted her to be more hungry for the story instead of aimlessly walking around wondering why people won’t tell her all their secrets. Like I said I just wish she was written with less tantrum and more tenacity.”

Again we don’t see this. The writers for some reason decided not to focus too much on Iris’s career. But we do see her join her mentor Mason in his suspicions on Star Labs. She contacts Barry to let him know of their suspicions since she knows they’re all close. When Iris first joined Central City News she stated that she wanted to write about Shelters for battered women. This is us that she really does care about the people of central city and didn’t want to stick to writing about only flash related things. But she finds out that they only hired her to write about the flash and that’s what she has to stick to to keep that job. We’ve seen Iris be tenacious. When she refused to give up writing about the flash even when the two most important people in her life told her to. Heck, Barry even “broke up” with her. That hurt them both deeply. Enough to bring them both to tears. But she didn’t stop.

Sorry this was so long, but there was still only one instance where Iris could be considered throwing a tantrum and that was during the dinner scene. This one scene, this one moment doesn’t define Iris’s character.

          • Mecha

Well I don’t think you are understanding what I’m saying. I’m not saying she should stop the blog, trust Barry explicitly or just curtail to Eddie. You asked for examples of tantrums not their deeper meaning or reasoning.
I’m not going to go very in depth because then it will just be a never ending back in forth.
One, just because you’ve helped some one and become good friends, does not mean you hang out at their place of business, but literally that’s all these people do, I find it odd. Visiting Iris at the newspaper and then Barry eating that hot pepper so he can date her co-worker seemed weird to me. If some one did that at my job my boss would ask that person to keep personal stuff at home. As a journalist I would find it odd that a famous genius became obsessed with my bff.
Her dad sees right through Wells and the situation from the begining so Idk what you mean Iris gets that from her father because she literally used her intuition a handful of times. If she is so intuitivethen why is she the last to know?
Two, her mentor at the newspaper told her about ‘his suspiciouns about Barry’ in the alt. Time line so in this one she has no idea about it. It would have been better if you saw her interviewing people about the flash, and something clicked, or reminded her Barry, then she could have became suspicious of Barry, than she could have listened to police radios trying to keep up with jim,

  • Lilah

I think the actress is doing a great job. My issue with her was not at all was that she was black, although I understand where other people were upset that they casted an actress that looked so different then she looked in the comic books. But I also agree that there was some horrible, nasty, and unnecessary things written and said about her. But the issue I have with Iris is the writing and the way the writers are portraying her character, she’s coming off as needy, passive aggressive, and self centered. Really nothing to do with the actress and all the writers.

  • Don Huizinga

This has NOTHING to do with her race, and everything to do with CW writers who like to set up shallow, selfish female lead characters. She’s a fine actress with horrible lines and terrible characterization.

  • Brian Black

Race hucksters: the definition of being ignorant and arrogant when it comes to interpreting other people’s beliefs and actions.

  • lasersmiles

If people are going to complain about Iris, they need to complain about Joe. They’re both great actors, but the show has problems that have nothing to do with race.

I liked Iris at first, then i started to dislike her because her character became a one-note “don’t tell her Barry is the Flash” character…then, when everyone else BUT her knows who he is, it makes no sense anymore. How exactly are they protecting her? So she has to just be contrarian to everything they do; she becomes an antagonist BARRY: “Don’t write about me.” IRIS:”I do what I want.” The only person who challenged the stereotype she was becoming was her boss at the job…who is no longer there. I liked it when he was giving her shit, because no one else in the show does. It’s an opportunity for her to grow. I STARTED to dislike her when she undermined Barry’s relationship with her co-worker. That was pretty low and petty.

They may have updated her race for modern times, but not her character. They need to give her some more interesting flaws and a goal other than being Barry’s love interest. She’s not even really a reporter, because she fell into it by writing a blog as a hobby.

    • Also Known As

      Agree with this comment 100%.

As far as Joe, I found him to be annoying and useless as a character as well, in many instances–it’s almost as though the character HAD to start investigating Harrison Wells just to give him an actual function, instead of being Barry’s emotional punching bag and crying all the damn time.

      • lasersmiles

Haha…well, I didn’t mean it THAT way…I mean if they’re gonna complain about race, they might as well complain about Joe, cause he’s black, too. I like Joe’s character okay…to be fair, there’s a lot of crying from everyone on the show. I don’t mind it though. Still a fun ass show!

        • Also Known As

Agreed–lots of fun to be had watching, even with its flaws.

    • beck0974

But people not telling her isn’t Iris’s fault and should make you dislike them for mistreating her, INSTEAD of disliking her for being mistreated. What kind of BS logic is that?

      • lasersmiles

It’s not just about them not telling her. How people react to her is also part of her character, as written by the show runners. So is her refusal to listen to the Flash when he asks her to stop, flat out saying to Barry f what you want this is what I want. As she was written in the first season she was annoying, the way she reacts to ‘being mistreated’. I am only a couple episodes into season 2, but it seems so far they have altered the trajectory of her reactions so she is more understanding and less judgmental

I disliked her character because that’s how they wrote her. I am not making a commentary on her personality, except for how it relates to the way she reacts to the situations she finds herself in. People rarely challenge her, and when they do, she has the opportunity to become interesting. She often reacts spoiled and bratty, but sometimes she is on point.

Sorry if you feel personally offended enough to call my logic BS. Chill

    SUCH bullsh*t.

I’m black. I’m finally sitting down to binge watch this show, and enjoying it mostly, and the problem is NOT race, and it’s NOT Ms. Patton. The problem is the WRITING.

Iris West, as written, is a wishy-washy person, she’s an unfaithful girlfriend, she’s self-centered and ungrateful, and she’s been openly MANIPULATIVE and CONNIVING on more than one occasion, and even Ms. Patton can’t shore up the unflattering way her character is written.

Stop with the race-baiting bullsh*t, keep it about the flaws in the STORYTELLING. I WANT to root for Iris, and I want to root for Iris and Barry, but right now (I’m on Ep. 21 of the first season), I’m rooting for Eddie to dump her and for Barry and Joe to rip her a new one for being such a selfish @$$hole.

  • KiraSushi

Eh Iris West is a shitty character with no depth. I’m only half way into the first season and her jeopardising Barry’s relationship with that girl Linda is extremely annoying to watch. I really don’t see what Barry sees in this character, aside from the fact that she’s pretty. She’s supposed to be a strong-willed and independent woman with gumption, but what could be a relatable and likeable trait is not portrayed at all. Actually, all the female characters in The Flash is weak and unrelatable. It’s so apparent this show was directed, written and casted by males. In this day and age where we see strong, flawed and complex female characters these old school comics could evolve to adapt to that. Boys aren’t the only ones that love super heroes.

    • Also Known As

The problem is the writing itself. It’s not the gender of the creative team.

      • KiraSushi

That’s definitely a huge attribute; they should hire better screen writers that can depict the depth of the individual characters. But I also think the lack of female directors, screen writers and producers in show biz is a contributing factor for a lot of shows like this. As a female viewer, the shows female characters feel very stereotypical and two-dimensional. I relate way more to the male characters (like Cisco). Could say it’s because it’s a super hero show but look at Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. The directors are Joss Whedon, Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen. One female director and the show’s female characters are way more in-depth, complex and just badass and awesome. And the men are just as complex and real. Again, could just be that the script writers are way better in this show! So you could be absolutely right and I could be totally off. But it is definitely something to ponder.

        • Also Known As

There are many, many great works of fiction and dramatic literature that serve as examples of male writers writing dynamite female characters (Anton Chekhov, Henrik Ibsen, Tennesse Williams, George Bernard Shaw are the dramatic writers I can think of off the top of my head).

Katheryn Bigelow directed “Hurt Locker”, which is centered on male soldiers, and those movies characters were very rich and complex. I know it’s not quite the same thing, but my point is that gender has nothing to do with the issue here.

At the same time, though, it’s also completely possible that there are no women in the writer’s room to say “guys, this is stupid. Why on earth would she do that?”, but then I return to the argument that if the men on the staff are really that narrow-minded, it’s not because they’re men, it’s because they’re not very good writers 🙁

          • KiraSushi

Very true! There’s a definite lack of imagination with the writers of the show.

Good discussion. Look at us being civil and not throwing offensive words around.

  • JT

I cannot stand Iris. It has nothing to do with the actress. I thought it was nice the show had diversity and I love Joe. But Iris is so annoying. Lois Lane in Smallville was a strong character and a gutsy reporter. Iris is supposed to be a reporter but she’s so mediocre that we forget that she’s a reporter most of the time. Her main characteristics are complaining about people keeping things from her and being mad at Barry for any reason, or mad at Eddie for not paying enough attention to her when they’re dating. Caitlin wouldn’t be my first choice for Barry but I can see where people are coming from. She’s smkinda has funny lines sometimes and she doesn’t get in the way of Barry.

I have to disagree with the article, it’s got absolutely nothing to do with the actress or her race but how her character is written as many people have pointed out.
I came here because I’ve been so impressed with Candice’s acting I searched for articles discussing her acting in the flash and I think she has the potential to do big things in her career.
I just wish that the writers would write her better, she is always either angry or serious, there’s very little humour being written for her which stunts her character. I’m hoping that they are doing this intentionally and that they will develop her more in the coming seasons. I hope it’s a Carol from The Walking Dead scenario because in the early seasons she was written as this meak and weak character whereas now she is a total badass and the contrast between the early and later seasons is brilliant writing.

  • Mary Foster

Thank you for writing this. People are going to hate regardless of what Iris does, if that was Pat or Caitlin who got angry at their father or Barry for LYING the audience would say they would have every right. Iris could save a baby and people will complain about how she saved the baby. Candice is an amazing actress her range of emotions and acting in general is brilliant. When watching a show whether it’s the flash or not people will bring their values, biases, judgements, prejudices and racists attitude.

I know nothing about the Flash canon, never read any comics, never watched any cartoons, didn’t read/watch anything related to the show when it was first coming out. I just started watching The Flash on Netflix this week. So the only interaction I have with Iris, the only knowledge I have of Iris, is based on what I’ve seen on the show. I had no idea she wasn’t black in the comics, or any cartoons/movies she was portrayed in before this show.

All that to say, I can’t stand Iris, and it has absolutely nothing to do with her skin color. I think her character was summed up best by Mason’s sarcastic comment. Iris was saying “I may not have experience, but I have…” and Mason interrupts with “Spunk! Grit! Gumption! What is this, a chick lit novel?”

Basically, Iris is that annoying character in chick lit that thinks she can get by in life by being recklessly independent and ignorantly investigative. She survives on running around doing the exact opposite of what trained crime professionals tell her to do, she jumps to conclusions, gets in peoples ways, is unforgiving and vindictive. She doesn’t allow for human error in anyone, but she is fine with her own imperfections. And there has been no character growth in her from the very beginning (maybe there will be later down the line. I’m only on episode 21 of season 1).

If I met Iris in person, she is not the type of person I would want to be friends with.

But you know what this goes to show? Candice Patton is a great actress. She took the role given her, and plays it so well that she sparks disdain for the character so passionate that people go online to complain about it.

So no, this isn’t a race thing for me. I think Candice Patton portrays the character written for her spectacularly, and I think Iris is a tool. I can only hope she becomes more tolerable as the show progresses.

    For
anyone who doesn’t already know, Iris West is not just
annoying on the show, she’s one of the most annoying characters in comics.
There is no way the hate is related to her being black (with the exception of
some crazy people). I think the actress is fine; it’s that horrible Iris West I
can’t stand. They should kill her off and make Michonne from the Walking Dead
his new girlfriend. That I would like.

  • Marcus Shaw

    This article is horrible.

  • Comefollowme

It’s not the actress who plays her. I just think her story line was just plain boring. Thanks to my Roku box. I can now fast forwarding all her scenes in every frames she’s in and it makes no difference to the story line. I’m so sick of these love triangle, Didn’t they do that in Arrow already ?

  • derekmorgansfakegirlfriend

Gorgeous biracial woman, great actor, smart, fierce, graduated at the top of her class. Beautiful tan, sexy lips, intense eyes, smile that melts, long thick mane, a fabulous botang, more muscle than fat, and girl don’t crack. Yeah I know the envy is real. I love her on the Flash. Patty and Caitlin pale in comparison. No pun intended.

  • yadayadayada

I just can’t stand her showing up in EVERY scene. Doesn’t she have a job? Shouldn’t she be at work and not at the police station? Star labs? Coffee shop? Anywhere anyone else is speaking? She is annoying and does nothing for the show at all.

  • Antonne Walker

she acts to white to me until it’s annoying

  • nunyabeeswax

Man this old article keeps getting hits. The use of the character and writing for her has improved greatly since season one, where they made the character unlikeable.

  • BTenn

I’m white and Iris West is one of my favorite characters. I never once batted my eyes at the fact they chose her to be black. Besides, Barry, her and Joe are my favorite characters. Candice Patton is gorgeous and a terrific actress. I see her as an independant woman who is a great role model for girls. I’m totally team Barry/Iris, I can’t wait!

  • nyúl béla

Would have been better if she was white, after all.

  • rosie1843

There are many who think Danielle Panabaker should’ve been Iris, but naw. She’s barely pulling off Caitlin.

Danielle Panabaker is doing a very good job as Caitlin. But I don’t see the on-screen romantic vibes between her and Grant Gustin’s Barry.

The writers have made the character utterly unlikeable. The character, as written, is selfish, needy, self centered.

No she wasn’t. I don’t recall Iris being portrayed that way back in Season 1. She was simply in the dark about Barry’s alter ego and she sensed that others were lying to her. When she finally got angry when she learned the truth, I felt that her anger was more than justified.

  • It’s not the actress I hate it’s the character she’s playing it’s the writers making her so annoying and hateable she says stupid stuff and asks why and expects explanations when they are all about to die. It’s like just shut up and die already please

  • jsy

Wow. Wonder what her dad did to get her to swear of Black men so early on.

  • Berserker66666

The actress who plays Iris West is ugly AF. Her character is annoying too. Arrow had the same problem too with Felicity except the actress who played her is hot.

  • Rosa Barron

There’s a reason Iris, Joe, and the West family are black on the show. It’s because in the comics, Wally West, or Kid Flash, in the New 52 reboot series, is black. So since they decided to make Wally Iris’ brother instead of her nephew, they chose to make Iris black. And it makes total sense and I love Candice and root for Barry and Iris. I have only watched Season 1 and the beginning of season 2 so far, but I think that Candice is an amazing actress who has been doing an incredible job with the shit writing she has been given. I just can’t with the personality they have written for Iris so far.

  • jsy

The real question is why does she totally shun black men?

  • Dianna Fenton

Iris really wasn’t a likable character for
season 1. She’s awesome now though. (I’m behind, just starting season 2 on Netflix) That being said I notice people have a fit when white comic characters are turned black, but not much is said when black characters are turned white. (Im white, this is not a biased observation) Oh and while I’m on about unlikability what the heck is wrong with Barry this season? He’s a jerk.

  • im kk

The actor playing Iris is a shockingly bad actor and so bland! I couldn’t care less if she is black, she can’t act and every scene she is in is boring! She can’t even stand still without looking awkward!

  • Psimple Gamer

She just brings nothing to the team other than being the girlfriend unlike every other character on the show. All the actors are talented so insulting them doesn’t make Iris look better.

  • Ventsislav Atanasov

I really, really can’t stand her. Every time she’s on screen I cringe, wondering what bullshit line she’ll spit out this time… unless it’s the usual “I’ll talk to him/her” every time someone’s sad… and her “let’s give this a shot” is so pathetic. Were the writers actually trying to make her sound that bad? I mean, come on.. Barry being devastated by all that’s happened to him at the end of Season 2 and all she could come up with was something along the line of “On the bright side, you can kiss me now cause Eddy is no more”. Oh gawwd, I loved Eddy. He made her look not so bad.

  • I thought it was AMAZING they cast a person of color as the love interest, but I was not a fan of the actress they chose. I thought she was annoying. But, as I’ve watched the show, she’s grown on me, and after a while you start to see in her what Barry does: she is smart, resourceful, and loyal.

For me, it helped seeing her character as a kid teaching Barry how to box: we got some insight into the character they were trying to portray. I also missed the episode where she inferred Barry was the Flash. How clever of her! She uses her journalism skills to help them find Grodd.

After watching it through the whole show again, this time I still like her character.

  • David Jenson

I don’t like her because in the first season she just plays with Barry’s and Eddie’s emotions. Women who play games like that deserve the hate get.

  • yaoi queen

I like how everyone is justifying their racism, misogyny, and misogynoir.

I haven’t really watched the show, but I do like how Iris is a black woman that’s conventionally attractive and girly. We HAVEN’T had a black woman like that, and it’s a breath of fresh air. What WHITE WOMEN (yes I’m calling them out), fail to realize is that black women are considered ugly, masculine, dumb, and sex-crazed. I’m glad that she only seems to be obsessed with Barry and Eddie. I’m glad that she was smart enough to use her connection to the flash to get a job. (I hope y’all realize that many men that work for different companies and got into college, got them because of their dad/family history). If a guy were jerking a woman/man around the entire show, people would LOVE him. Don’t say they won’t because people like Conner from HTGAWM, and he pretty much kept screwing with Oliver.

Anyway… I want MORE feminine black women that are super cute and have connections to use.

  • Nicholas Michel

I hat the fact that she thinks shes entitled to know everything, like chill the hell out youre just a friend of barrys and you write shitty blogs. Who do you think you are the POTUS? Also she has very little stage presence, she has no personality, every line she says is annoying and delivered with such dullness. I scream at the tv everytime shes on screen, like when she some how magically find her way inside star labs and starts asking all these questions like shes their boss or something. Also starts to throw a fit when the flash loses to grodd the first time like everything revolves around her, then when she starts communicating with the flash via the headset the second time the flash goes into the sewers is some cringeworthy stuff coming from iris. I really hope she gets less screen time in upcoming season. Also never knew before hand that iris was played by a black woman. Just started picking up the flash a couple weeks ago and im loving it except for the the whole iris debacle. The actor cant act and the lines given to her make for the ultimate cringe fest.

  • Nicholas Michel

Also i bet the ones who think candice is doing a “good job” are probably black. Your race shouldnt affect anything. Candice cant act worth shit and her character is dogshit.

  • Marsin Dimitrov

she is not a very bad actress, the problem is the Dialog of this tv show! the script written for under 10 yo understanding so it loses the quality badly, the script is so poor, that’s why maybe after 3 season you still don’t communicate with characters like other tv shows. and at the end who ever chose this Cast for The Flash was High af for sure!

  • Xander Gallardo

Hey guys yes i hate iris because he is so annoying, i mean when eddie has been kidnapped by reverse flash, and barry did anything he could to find him but he expected that he can be save just by that and she yells at barry like she was trying to say barry couldnt do nothing to save eddie. And one time she already have a fiancee why would she just be sweet with barry when he was dating linda.. she was like trying to be a 2 timer she already have eddie that time wew wtf,,…eewwww…. patty is so much better with barry together i mean.. patty is brave kind and always cares about barry even though he knew he is lying she still loves him.. so PATTY and BARRY is better than iris.. and im not saying that barry is better with patty because shes white.. im not a racist and the actress who plays iris is so damn hot even though she is black she is sexy… i shipped barry and patty not iris and barry because the directors made iris so bad…

  • Armless Gamers (offender420)

Such awful writing.. what the hell is wrong with people creating characters of which they know we’re gonna hate?? Getting annoyed by villains – ok. I get it. But a character like that..? I’d rather root for her then hate but come on… she sticks her nose in every matter, keeps running her bullshit blog even after both the flash AND barry asked her to stop, nor does she consider her father or boyfriend. Selfish behaviour and for what? To stroke her damn ego. Not for barry as she claims, we all know it.
Look at that big fucking smile on her face right after she used the name flash instead of streak..
Look at that big smile while she’s watching her “followers” grow.
    Yaaaaayyy attention!
She reminds me of those awful female characters in horror movies, running around screaming so the attacker knows where they are at all times. (Shining, anyone?)
It’s really hard to respect women if they are being depicted as selfish, egomaniac idiots in series/films like these…

  • Manoj Bhargav

Ohhhh plz , everybody hates iris cause of her colour and obviously she is the ugliest address I ve ever seen , and berry is handsome and is also having powers , and iris is ugly it is obvious dat everyone hates iris , and to god sake I am waiting for casting to change ,. she is ugly, black AND STUPID ACTRESS! WHY CW wont kill her? Worst actress ever…

  • Chadd Kinsey

Not everything is so…black and white.

  • Marlz Marlz

I agree. Candice Patton is doing an awesome job! And she stays classy even with all the hate that she gets. But no one can argue with the show’s ratings…despite all the hate, the show is no. 1! I dont care what anyone says, i enjoy seeing grant and candice (barry and iris) together!
