The highly anticipated Greenleaf has finally arrived. A mega-church is the setting. A family death is the catalyst. We’ll see that not all is what it seems with the Greenleaf family who runs the church. Treachery and misdeeds will be unearthed that will make even the devil shed a tear. Lynn Whitfield plays the family matriarch, so you already know it’s going to be good.

Synopsis:

The story centers on the journey of estranged daughter and disillusioned preacher Grace Greenleaf (Merle Dandridge, The Night Shift) who has returned home after 20 years on the occasion of the mysterious death of her sister, Faith. As she reenters the world of Calvary Fellowship World Ministries, the Memphis mega-church run by her powerful parents Bishop James Greenleaf (Keith David, Enlisted and Community) and Lady Mae Greenleaf (Lynn Whitfield, The Josephine Baker Story), it becomes evident that things are not as virtuous as they seem and that the family’s outward display of faith hides their sin and misdeeds.

Cast:

Crew:

Greenleaf will premiere tonight, June 21, 2016 at 10/9c and air regularly on Wednesdays at 10/9c on OWN.

Josephine Baker

We can’t get through Black History Month without talking about Josephine Baker. She did it all. She was a singer, dancer, actor, activist, and even spy.

Josephine Baker was the first Black woman to star in a major film. She achieved worldwide recognition, another first for a Black woman. She was heavily involved in the Civil Rights Movement, even refusing to perform for segregated audiences.

The Josephine Baker Story is a TV film that aired on HBO. Lynn Whitfield starred as Baker. The film follows Baker as she worked to achieve worldwide fame.

It won a Golden Globe, an Emmy, and an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series, Mini-Series, or Television Movie for Whitfield. It is available here.
