Producer Kevin Feige spoke on it saying,

We are fortunate to have such an esteemed filmmaker join the Marvel family. The talents Ryan showcased in his first two films easily made him our top choice to direct Black Panther. Many fans have waited a long time to see Black Panther in his own film, and with Ryan we know we’ve found the perfect director to bring T’Challa’s story to life.

Black Panther isn’t due until 2018, but Chadwick Boseman is due to make his first appearance as T’Challa in Captain America: Civil War which opens in theaters May 6, 2016. Check him out in the Civil War trailer.

There was a rumor floating around the interwebs stating that Ava DuVernay had finalized the deal to direct Black Panther. DuVernay addressed the rumor this weekend at Essence Fest, saying that she would not be directing the film. I love that DuVernay gave the exclusive to Essence.

DuVernay spoke to Essence, saying:

“I’m not signing on to direct Black Panther. I think I’ll just say we had different ideas about what the story would be. Marvel has a certain way of doing things and I think they’re fantastic and a lot of people love what they do. I loved that they reached out to me…

I loved meeting Chadwick and writers and all the Marvel execs. In the end, it comes down to story and perspective. And we just didn’t see eye to eye. Better for me to realize that now than cite creative differences later…

I love the character of Black Panther, the nation of Wakanda and all that that could be visually. I wish them well and will be first in line to see it.”

There were many of us excited to see what DuVernay was going to do with Black Panther, but this may be for the best. Marvel does have a formula/outline for their films, and I would hate to see her creativity stifled. Although the fact they didn’t see eye to eye has me interested in Marvel is going to do with Black Panther. Hopefully they will keep to the spirit of the character. Marvel has a good track record so far, so I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt. Who would you like to see direct Black Panther?

Black Panther is scheduled to be released July 6, 2018.

Ava DuVernay could be joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Marvel is in talks with DuVernay to direct one of their “diverse” films, likely to mean Black Panther or Captain Marvel.

I think she would be a great fit for Black Panther. I think she could bring out the essence of Black Panther that we all know and love because it’s time for Black Panther to shake things up.

If DuVernay were to take on directing either film, she would be the first Black person and the first woman to direct an MCU film. It’s about time Marvel diversified its line of directors. Would you like to see Ava DuVernay direct an MCU film?
