Ever since Issa Rae announced she would be developing a slate of web series, we’ve been anxiously awaiting their arrivals. Now we have ‘Giants,’ a series about millennials trying to make it in this tough world. Take a look at the first episode and make sure to subscribe to the Issa Rae channel for updates. ‘Giants’ is created, written, and directed by James Bland.

Synopsis:

Three millennials determined to live life on their own terms, no matter the cost, quickly learn that when life starts to kick your ass, you either lie down, or fight back.

All struggling to make rent, Malachi lands a Craigslist modeling gig; Journee’s depression renders her useless, and Ade begins a second job after his father cuts him off.

‘Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop’ Web Series

We have a new web series to add to your watch list. “Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop” is a hip-hop comedy that follows the wayward adventures of Sean, a Hip Hop blogger from Harlem. The episodes aren’t long, so you can even watch them during the commercial breaks of your favorite television show.

‘Surviving’ Web Series

The apocalypse and zombies have been a classic staple in horror and dystopia since I don’t know when. But somehow, someway, Black people usually don’t survive to see the apocalypse. If they do, they become cannon fodder. Take The Walking Dead for example. You know a Black character is about to die when a new Black character is introduced. But you don’t have to worry about that with “Surviving,” a new web series developed by Reagan Gomez. Surviving is told from the point of view of Shayla, a Black woman, who gets a close view of the apocalypse. Check out the first couple of episodes below.

Synopsis:

When Shayla’s hospital is inundated with sick patients, she hears rumors that the “sickness” is actually a mysterious virus. Even with the city on the brink of an evacuation, Shayla remains professional and calm as she finishes her shift. It’s not until much later when she comes face to face with the effects of the virus, that she realizes how serious things are.

New episodes of “Surviving” are released on Tuesdays.

‘Vixen’ Episode One

‘Vixen’ Trailer

Ever since it was announced that the superhero Vixen would be getting her own animated series, we’ve been waiting in anticipation. Now, we’ve got a trailer to whet our appetites.

Megalyn Echikunwoke voices Vixen, whose real name is Mari McCabe and can exhibit the traits of animals. Vixen will be airing on CW Seed, The CW’s online channel, with six episodes. Hopefully this is just a test run, and we’ll get a live action series soon.

Synopsis:

Originally from Africa, Mari McCabe’s parents were killed by local greed, corruption, and wanton violence. But the orphaned Mari refuses to succumb to the terrors surrounding her.

Inheriting her family’s Tantu Totem, Mari can access the powers of animals – anything from the super-strength of a gorilla to the speed of a cheetah. As Vixen, she fights valiantly to protect the world from threats like those that claimed her family.

Vixen premieres August 25 on CW Seed.

‘Field Goal’ Web Series

It’s been a while since we’ve featured a web series, but we’ve got one for you. “Field Goal” shows us what happens when you have an overloaded schedule and you try to date someone with an overloaded schedule. It becomes hard to spend time with each other. Check out the first episode below to see how Monica navigates her relationship woes.

Synopsis:

“Field Goal” is a drama webisode revolving around the life and work of a Secretary at a Law Firm that’s going to Law School and her hardworking Blue Collar boyfriend that’s a workaholic and works at a Supply Company. Monica Jones is dedicated to her relationship to Darius Smith and likes to spend a lot of quality time with him but he works a crazy schedule and can’t spend as much or put in the time to make the relationship spicy. Monica is forced to spend time with friends that will make time for her.

‘The Lyons Den’ Returns

‘Typecasted’ Trailer

We haven’t seen this many Black people on television, especially network television, since UPN still existed. We’re making great strides, but we still have a long way to go. Actors run the risk of getting typecast into certain roles, but for Black actors it’s worst. They’re more likely to get typecast into stereotypical roles. “Typecasted” explores the struggle of an actor as he advances his career, while having to take these stereotypical roles. And to make it worse, his white roommate is getting all of the good roles, and his girlfriend is less than supportive. Watch the trailer below and stay tuned for updates.
