Selma was one of the most talked about films for the latter part of last year and the first quarter of this year. Centered around the march from Selma to Montgomery and the Voting Rights Act, Selma gives us a new, refreshing look at Dr. Martin Luther King, one different than the sanitized version the media tries to sell to us. It might’ve been snubbed from some major awards, but that doesn’t take away from the brilliance of the film. Ava DuVernay has already announced that each high school will be receiving a copy of Selma. Now you can, too. Cast and crew information can be found here and a brief synopsis is included below.

Synopsis:

Selma chronicles the tumultuous three-month period in 1965, when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. led a dangerous campaign to secure equal voting rights in the face of violent opposition. The epic march from Selma to Montgomery culminated in President Johnson signing the Voting Rights Act of 1965, one of the most significant victories for the civil rights movement. Director Ava DuVernay’s Selma tells the real story of the revered leader and visionary Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his brothers and sisters in the movement that prompted change that forever altered history.

Dear White People

If you’re a Black person who’ve attended a PWI (predominantly white institution), you might empathize with some of the experiences depicted in Dear White People. Dear White People is a satirical take on the racial issues that permeate the collegiate culture at PWIs. What started as a script based on the based on the experiences of Justin Simien and a trailer, it became an Indiegogo project that managed to raise $40,000, surpassing its $25,000 goal. It was met with critical acclaim.

Synopsis:

The unexpected election of activist Samantha White as head of a traditionally black residence hall sets up a college campus culture war that challenges conventional notions of what it means to be black. While Sam leverages her notoriety as host of the provocative and polarizing radio show “Dear White People” to try to prevent the college from diversifying Armstrong Parker House, outgoing head-of-house Troy Fairbanks, son of the university’s dean, defies his father’s lofty expectations by applying to join the staff of Pastiche, the college’s influential humor magazine. Lionel Higgins, an Afro-sporting sci-fi geek, is recruited by the otherwise all-white student newspaper to go undercover and write about black culture—a subject he knows little about—while the aggressively assimilated Coco Conners tries to use the controversy on campus to carve out a career in reality TV.

But no one at Winchester University is prepared for Pastiche’s outrageous, ill-conceived annual Halloween party, with its “unleash your inner Negro” theme throwing oil on an already smoldering fire of resentment and misunderstanding. When the party descends into riotous mayhem, everyone must choose a side.
