It’s Mother’s Day, and what better way is there to celebrate than by highlighting some great Black TV moms. There’s nothing on Earth like a Black mom, and that’s been showcased on television. Check out the list below for just a glimpse of some great TV moms.

1. Clair Huxtable (The Cosby Show)

When you think of Black TV moms, the first person that comes to mind is Clair Huxtable. Clair is a prime example of no matter how much good parenting you do, sometimes your kids end up being screwups. Even though she did produce Sondra and Vanessa, we won’t hold that against her. She has had some epic mom moments. Don’t mess with her.

2. The original Vivian Banks (The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air)

Another mom you don’t wanna mess with is Aunt Viv. Whether you’re her child or not, she will school you, sometimes literally. You may think you’re a goon, but she ain’t never scared. She’ll take you down in her Sunday’s best.

3. Florida Evans (Good Times)

Florida Evans has performed some magic that only Black moms can. She managed to raise her family in the impoverished projects and then had to go at it alone after the death of her husband.

4. Mama Payne (Martin)

I’m not going to lie. Mama Payne is on here for her biscuits. Her biscuits are legendary in a way that could only come out of the kitchen of a Black woman. And she was protective of her baby boy, dangerously so.

5. Janet “Jay” Kyle (My Wife and Kids)

Jay Kyle was a fun mom, but she also served as the voice of reason, which was necessary when you consider who her husband was. It was like she was raising another child.

6. Ruby Johnson (Black-ish)

Ruby is one of the newer moms (grandmas) on TV, but she’s already a classic. She’s steals every scene she’s in. She can be quite judgemental, but love wins out over prejudice in her book.

7. Tasha Mack (The Game)

Tasha Mack is a character to put it mildly. She helped build her son’s career as a professional football player, though. She also was a mother figure (at times) to the Sunbeams.

8. Lisa Landry (Sister Sister)

Lisa Landry has had a precarious situation as a mom. She found out her adopted daughter, Tia, had a twin. Instead of prohibiting a relationship between the twins or even just letting them have a relationship without taking an interest in it, Lisa stepped up and became a mother figure to Tamera, too.

9. Harriette Winslow (Family Matters)

With the exception of losing little Judy, Harriette Winslow rocked the mom role. She stayed true to her values and made sure her kids did the right thing, too. Plus, she had to deal with Steve Urkel on a daily basis.

10. Rochelle (Everybody Hates Chris)

Rochelle strikes fear into the heart of children. All she needs is to give a look, but her mouth backs it up as well. She does have tender moments, though, and it’s clear that she loves her family.

Who’s your favorite TV mom?

The DC Comics based Supergirl cast is rounding out. Mehcad Brooks will be playing James “Jimmy” Olsen, affable photographer and great friend to Superman/Clark Kent and Lois Lane. In this case, Jimmy will be Supergirl’s love interest.

Mehcad Brooks is known for his roles in Necessary Roughness, True Blood, and Desperate Housewives. He also had a recurring role in The Game. I’m anxious to see what type of spin Brooks will put on this mainstay character.

Supergirl already has a series commitment and will be airing on CBS.

In a Wednesday packed full of Black shows, we’ll now have to add The Game to the list. Last season of The Game ended with Jason and Chardonnay at the alter, and Jason declaring his love for his ex-wife, Kelly. Tasha had her baby. Malik was being Malik, and who ever really knows what going on with Blue and Keira?

The premiere should be interesting because Chardonnay is a volatile woman. She’s always ready to dole out a beatdown. Anyone at that church could face her wrath. She doesn’t seem like the type to differentiate between the innocent and the guilty.

The Game only has a couple of seasons left, so let’s hope they bring it. Some of their story lines have been lackluster. The premiere episode will be an hour.

Cast:

Wendy Raquel Robinson – Latasha “Tasha” Mack

Hosea Chanchez – Malik Wright

Coby Bell – Jason Pitts

Brandy Norwood – Chardonnay Pitts

Lauren London – Keira Whitaker

Jay Ellis – Bryce “Blueprint” Westbrook

Brittany Daniel – Kelly Pitts

Crew:

Creator – Mara Brock Akil

The Game airs on Wednesdays at 10/9c on BET.
