Carl Winslow - Black TV Dads

On Mother’s Day we highlighted some great TV moms. We can’t leave the fathers out. Black fathers get a bad rep in society, but these Black TV dads show that stereotype is unfounded.

Philip Banks (The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air)

Even though he had three kids of his own, Uncle Phil took in his knuckleheaded nephew, who gave him nothing but trouble. He may have constantly thrown Jazz out the house, but when push came to shove, he was the father Will never had.

Ray Campbell  (Sister Sister)

It’s not everyday you find out your daughter has a twin sister. But Ray Campbell took it in stride. Not only did he become a surrogate father to Tia, but he also took in her and her mother, Lisa.

James Evans (Good Times)

Although he was only on Good Times for a short while, he had a lasting impact. He worked tirelessly to provide for his family, trying to create some good times in their hard knock lives.

Floyd Henderson (Smart Guy)

One son stayed in trouble. The other son was too smart for his own good. Add that to friend Mo eating him out of house and home, and it’s a miracle Floyd Henderson kept it all together.

Heathcliff Huxtable (The Cosby Show)

Despite the actor’s personal life, Cliff Huxtable is about the most well-known Black TV dad. He and wife Clair are the essential power couple who manages to take care of a house full of kids, more coming every season.

Bernie “Mac” McCullough (The Bernie Mac Show)

Uncle Bernie is probably not your first choice to take care of your kids. Or your tenth choice. But he took in his sisters’ kids and treated them like his own. He took tough love to a whole new level.

Frank Mitchell (Moesha)

Moesha was a lot to handle. It was always something with her. The fact that Frank Mitchell could corral her at all is a testament. Plus he fed Hakeem. And who would even know what a Saturn was without him?

Oscar Proud (The Proud Family)

We have to show some love to the animated world. Oscar Proud made some disgusting snacks, but hey, he gave us the twins. That alone earns him a spot on the list.

Fred Sanford (Sanford and Son)

When Fred Sanford wasn’t faking heart attacks, he had a chemistry with his son that is timeless and will probably never be recreated.

Carl Winslow (Family Matters)

Anyone who manages to raise a family while dealing with Steve Urkel on a daily basis deserves a spot on the list.

Who is your favorite Black TV dad?
