Last night was the Golden Globes, and things went pretty much as expected. There were some disappointments (a certain actor winning for a film about a mop), some winners who actually deserved the award, and some corny jokes. There weren’t that many Black Golden Globe winners, one if you’re only counting competitive categories, but the two we had outshined everyone else there. Check out their speeches and some pictures from the show. Congratulations to all the winners.

Empire is on a roll. Two episodes in and it has been renewed for a second season. This is no surprise considering the ratings. It looks like we’ll be seeing more of the Lyons. It’s never a bad thing to see more of Taraji P. Henson.

I approached Empire with an open mind, despite the early criticisms of it. That being said, it was a decent watch. I was entertained, even though I was shaking my head at some point.

The storyline is neither revolutionary nor original, but hardly anything is these days. It’s time for a father to step down and pick his successor. Conveniently, all of his children are male. The sons must prove their worth. One is all for it. One is apathetic. One is against it. The one against it soon changes his mind. War is brewing. Winter is coming. It’s like Godfather meets Hustle and Flow.

The acting leaves something to be desired, except for Taraji P. Henson. Her performance alone elevated the show. Her character will be the one to look after. She seems to be the most developed character on the show. She has the right amount of jadedness, cunning, spunk. She appears to be the one getting played, but by the end, she’ll probably be on top.

Terrence Howard’s acting could use some fine tuning. He wasn’t the most believable as a ruthless media mogul. Maybe he needs to put some bass in his voice or something. He seems like the mogul Drake would be. And of course his character gets ALS to capitalize off of the popularity of the Ice Bucket Challenge. I mean I guess… It’s whatever. I’m just gonna pretend he has cancer or something.

Watching the show, I was like “Who taught these kids to hate themselves?” Would it kill just one of them to have a Black significant other? It didn’t take long for my first question to be answered. Their parents taught them to hate themselves. Between a homophobic father who doesn’t hide his disdain for his child and the mother who uses troublesome languages and beats her child with a broomstick, these kids are surprisingly well-adjusted.

Empire wasn’t a homerun, but I’ve seen worse. I don’t put much stock pilots, because they’re usually rough around the edges. I’ll follow it for at least a few episodes to see how it progresses. Taraji alone should make it worthwhile.

If using an arbitrary rating system, I would give it three Pan-African flags out of five.

My favorite moment has been captured by beysoldweave on Tumblr.

Empire is an upcoming show on FOX about the struggle for the throne of a media empire. Fox is having some successes with their latest shows such as Gotham and Sleepy Hollow and some not so successful shows like Red Band Society, so it’s going to be interesting to see where Empire falls on the list. Some have described it as a Hustle and Flow knockoff, but we’ll see how it develops.

Synopsis:

An immensely talented artist, the CEO of Empire Entertainment and a former street thug, his reign has been unchallenged for years. But all that changes, when he learns he has a disease that is going to render him crippled and incapacitated in a matter of three years. The clock is ticking, and he must groom one of his three sons to take over his crowning achievement, without destroying his already fractured family. Lucious’ favorite is his youngest son, Hakeem, a gifted musician and a spoiled playboy who values fame over hard work. The middle son, Jamal, is a sensitive soul and a musical prodigy who, unlike Hakeem, shies away from the spotlight. Jamal also happens to be gay, which infuriates and embarrasses his father. Andre, the eldest son, is CFO of Empire Entertainment. Wharton-educated with a brilliant business mind, Andre lacks the charisma that Lucious believes is crucial to running the company. But in his quest for power, Andre is assisted by his manipulative and like-minded wife, Rhonda (Kaitlin Doubleday). As Lucious prompts his sons to vie for the empire, his plans are thrown into chaos when his ex-wife, Cookie, mysteriously emerges seven years early from prison, where she’s been for almost two decades. Brash and fearless, she sees herself as the sacrificial lamb who built this empire with Lucious and then took the fall for running the drugs that financed Lucious’ early career. For now, Lucious remains firmly in control of Empire Entertainment. As the Lyons slug it out, an emotional chess game begins that will either cause the family’s destruction or redemption. Lives and loves will be lost as the complicated family will come together and fall apart over the elusive throne, all set to an original soundtrack written and produced by legendary hip-hop hitmaker Timbaland. Will the family unite and learn to love each other before it’s too late? Love, war, family, sacrifice, money and music: this is the story of the Lyons’ EMPIRE
